I believe that I have experienced the same issue. I suspect that it is my fault... assuming that my original load of Win2K was an upgrade or OEM load, then attempt to rebuild with a Full Win2K. The Keyfinder helps me keep track of what versions I have on each machine so I do not attempt to use a mis-matched version with an individual machine.
Assuming that you have a legal license to use this software but have no luck with Microsoft try looking on Google Groups. You will find a key there pretty easily. Do not install this software if you do not have a license for Windows.

I think I understand what you are trying to do. You want to install your original OS (which is Win2000) back onto your computer so that you may use your XP upgrade CD but all you have is the cd key for XP. Without the CD key for Win2000 you can't do either one. I think that your SOL or you need to find another cd key for Win2000. But only if you have a legal copy of it in the first place.......????

I'm a little fuzzy on what you're trying to do. I'll assume you're LEGALLY reinstalling XP from an upgrade disk. If this is the case, you'll only need the XP key. It will ask you to verify ownership of 2000 by putting the CD in. When you try to reactivate it, that's when you'll run into problems and probably have to give the "good" folks at Redmond a call.
