Question

IE problem

Asked by: cakirfatih

Hi guys,

I have a 200o pro computer, i cannot browse some web sites with that computer
such as Network Associates ans Symantec web sites,
I suspect that this is caused by a virus.

I updated that computer with all security patches , and run virus scan twi times with the latest virus definitions.
there is no infected files anymore,
but i still have the same problem with browsing those web pages

and also that computer shuts down itself sometimes, i was not able to see any message before it shuts down.

Thanks

Can you check the Event viewer after it shuts down?  what virus scanner are you using?  may also be spyware, you could try using spybot in safe mode.  is it possible that certain website have been setup as restricted by possible a virus?  you can check that under tools>internet option inside of explorer.  Hope this helps.

Please check the hosts file in the c:\%system dir%\system32\drivers\etc\

and ensure that nothing other than the localhost 127.0.0.1 entry is available in the list.

Try to run Ad-Aware/apybot and clearup all the spyware./adware files. Also, run the coolwebshredder.

This should fix the problem:

Ad-Aware: http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware

Spybot: http://www.safer-networking.org/

CWShredder:

Good luck!!

Exactly, what I suspected.

You can see all the sites are assigned 127.0.0.1

Edit and delete all the entries except 127.0.0.1 LOCAlhost [1st on the list]

The HOSTS file is a read-only file by default.

Right-click the file and select properties, and uncheck the Read-Only option. Clik Ok to exit.

Now, right-click the file and select "open with" and select Notepad and make the changes and save the file. Once done, right-click the file and select properties and reenable the Read-Only option.

This should fix.

Kumaran

thank you for the help
i have another question actullay
What is the difference between SpyBoot and AdAware?? do they have the same functionality
and if you have them both on a computer, would it create any problems?

thanks

by: jon_godwinPosted on 2004-03-15 at 09:44:41ID: 10599167

Yes they are perform the same functionallity, and no it wont create problems having both installed.

by: rbkumaranPosted on 2004-03-15 at 09:58:21ID: 10599286

It will not create any problems. Actually, some malwares that are not detected by Ad-Aware are detected by Spybot and Vice Versa.
