Yes I unchecked the allow box.
If I check deny box, what does it entail?

What permissions can I grant users on network folders/files which will allow them to create, edit, rename files and folders but preventing them from deleting files or folders?
We have had a number of folders deleted by accident as currently users have been assigned with modify permissions. I've played around with special permissions - removing delete and delete subfolders and files - I can create folders, but can't rename and I cant delete anything.
I am hoping there is another way where I can achieve both - create, edit, rename files/folders but no delete rights.
Please advise.
Thanks in advance.

Hi again
I tried deny on delete subfolders/files and delete - was not able to delete and rename files/folders.
I tried deny only on delete subfolders/files and allow delete - I was able to create, rename and delete files folder.
I tried deny only on delete subfolders/files and no tick on either allow or deny on 'delete' - I was still able to rename and delete files/folders.
Surely, if it says deny delete subfolders/files - it should do what it's says.
But it looks as though 'delete' takes priority over the other.
Any suggestions?
"When you access data over the network, both share permissions and file and folder permissions apply. Share access permissions are combined from any permissions that are assigned directly to the user and those assigned to any groups of which the user is a member. The exception to this is if there is an explicit Deny permission on the folder or file. This occurs because Deny permissions are enumerated first when Windows 2000 is determining whether or not a particular user can perform a particular task. Therefore, if Frank, for example, is a member of a group that has the Deny check box selected for Read in the Deny column, he is unable to read the file or folder, even if other permissions should allow him to do so."

When you removed the delete permission did you just uncheck the allow box? you should check the Deny box beside any delete options in special permissions.
