Question

rejoining a domain in windows 2000

Asked by: dmctighe

Here is a problem I have had in the past with windows 2000 and windows 2000 server, If I ever have to rejoining the domain either because I rename the computer or have problems with a user and delete the user from server then readd the same username I have to redo all the settings and email. Also, we have two offices, one with domain name "city.company.com" and the other with "company.com". They are not networked together. If I take a laptop from my office and want to join the domain out at the other city, I have to go into network identification and join the different domain, then when I come back to my home office and rejoin my domian I have to reset everything including email, desktop, etc.  I'm pretty sure its because the new SID #, but I am hoping there is a way around this.

I know what I'm trying to ask, but I don't know if I explained my question very well.

Thanks
Derek McTighe

You have to reset everything because your profile is getting re-created.

Use the copy profile dialog (right click my computer and select properties to get to it) to copy your profile and set the permission to use to everyone.

You will then be able to back this set of files up and restore it when you re-join the domain.

Cheers

This would tell me that your domains are not related. There for they do not share any information like the schema. rid, fsmo & active directory (if your running 2K servers). You will have to continue to rejoin the domains as you move back and forth.

If you would like to be able to log into both domains without actually your machine being part of either just install TSWEB on a terminal server on both domains.  then conect to each terminal server via the corresponding web site.

TSWEB can run on any server or share point. The html loads your IE with an Active X control. You could keep it on your laptop and access it. I also have a modified twsweb.htm that has a drop down list that you can edit with notepad to add or remove your frequent servers you visit. The machine your trying to get into must have the terminal services running or the remote desktop checked.
I would second Master Cheif's suggestion in this case!!!

Exactly!

I love Terminal Services.  Especially TSWEB.  It's very useful and easy.  :)

the best thing to do would be to set up a vpn connection between the offices and then make city.company.com a child of company.com, but don't know if that is an option for you....

but it would be nice for you if the two offices had some kind of connection... then you could at least....
set up a trust relationship between the two domains? you can then have a profile from both domains on your computer that you can use when you're in each office.... with that setup you wouldn't have to mess with your computer domain membership....having to do that is just a pain in the butt....

As far as using your laptop on two domains goes, try an application called Netswitcher.
It stores multiple network profiles (including domains) and you can just select which one you want to join and it swaps your settings automatically.
I havent used it myself but I am sure it will do what you need.

You can get it here:
