boot to the 2000 cd and enter the recovery console and copy \winnt\repair\system
to \winnt\system32\config\SYS
ensure you are pressing F6 and loading any needed drivers if the system is using a controler other than a standard IDE... raid scsi sata etc...
then exit and reboot. the files in the repair directory are copies of the files used on the last succesful boot.

Hi ITGL72,
Side note is for nothing -- it is default windows directory.
I had some kind of similar problem when i acidentaly deleted some sistem files (long story :))
I was able to install over and save my information (o.k all registry keys were gone, but files still were there)
P.S. you can put that HDD to another computer as second and get all information out from it. (it is safer than my aproach ;))
P.P.S. maybe there is a way to restore your current instalation, I do not know about them.
I'm only learning :)
Cheers!
