Question

Managing Windows via My Computer

Asked by: Lindsay37

When I right click on My Computer and click on "manage" I have many items to look at and monitor. I notice in System Info I have many "alerts." What do I do?

In the Event Viewer the Applications are loaded with Errors and Warnings; and the System is loaded with many Errors. What do I do there?

Thank you.

Hello Lindsay37 =)
but these erros are about..... what?? ;-)

by: SheharyaarSaahilPosted on 2005-01-01 at 15:31:45ID: 12937265

i mean any specific application or service..... coz Event Viewer logs the crashes of programs and services..... and possible that a service is having problems on your system and thud Event Viewer has tracked all of those errors! :)

We're talking HUGE. I mean days of long long lists each day about almost anything usually one per minute or so. Tell me what I can get to show you here. I just cannot write it all down or I'll be here until mid-January. ;) A LOT of problems are noted just today.

After you had me use HiJack I believe that all cleaned up, but now it's back. I can do copy and paste back and forth I believe OR if there is a way to make a log copy (even part of them) I can do that. I just don't know how to present my information so it will help you help me.

Along this line of thought (maybe) defrag just can't finish today. It bogs down about 1/3rd of the way. I has always done its job in about 1/2 hour or so. Not today. Something's slowing it.

We also deleted a bunch of stuff that you read from the HiJack Report (and does this relate to Task Manager (the long list of activites running in there)?

You will need to walk me through the HiJack process again. I have the program but forget what I did!

Arantius, I cannot find Performance and Maintenance then Admin. Tools when I go into the Control Panel. I searched everything and everywhere. I found Permance Options in "System." But there is just something for selecting size of some activities I'm not sure I understand. It had nothing to do with Admin. Tools.

Can you remember what the "icon" is for this in 2000Pro? Guess XP outwitted me on this one too.

Thanks!

Shehar, I poked around in there (My Computer/Manage), and there were some print errors, but the printer is fine.

A warning on Dnscache. (didn't check properties tab)

An error: Scheduler (didn't check properties tab)

Warning on Dhcp: Properties...Unable to renew address from Network for network card with network aderess (000.......06 for a very long number). Error: Semaphor timeout period expired. Something about it keeping on trying.

Error re DCOM (there are hundreds of these things since Dec. 21...I allow the logs to build up for several days then it deletes and starts all over). One error says Attempting to launch Dcom server using DefaultLaunchPermission. User unavailble.

I usually deny ANYthing that says my "server" is trying to access the Internet because I'm not a general server (no network as I have only one computer at this time). ZoneAlarm gives me the choice of permitting or denying, and many of these errors must be coming from me denying (the rule of thumb from ZoneAlarm is that if I don't know what it is DENY! Then it says something about permitting if I find out something is really needed. I never do. Computer runs fine no matter if I deny. If it's accessing a website for info I need/want, I permit.

So, I think ZoneAlarm is probably following my instructions as often I check a box for always remembering my response. I can change these at any point, but why? If I am not hampered (don't think I am) on the Internet why permit.

Why does my computer think it's a server (from the NIC)? I know this is built into Win2000, but why would I need to be anyone's server on the internet?

I can get more for you if you wish.

Don't forget about the HiJack thingee as that was really great to clean up so much when we did it probably in November.

The best way to deal with Event Log errors is to check the log just after a full reboot.  You'll see Event number 6005 in the System Log, which is the Event Log Service starting - this happens when the pc boots.  Then, find the first major Error event AFTER that one, and work on it.  Alternatively, work on one that recurs the whole time.

Danny, I'll check, but I don't know what "work on it" means. I'll also check the link you provided. I'm pretty lost on these logs and interpreting what they mean even when reading their properties. I'd be scared to "work on" anything. ;)

1) Update your system, your antivirus and Fully-Scan your System, schedule a full scandisk of the drive and reboot,
2) Boot into Safe-Mode, do a disk cleanup, remove unnecessary apps, defrag and delete all the logs,
3) Start over, Boot-Normal and launch NOTHING! neither connect anything!
Then go to the System Event-Log and tell us the first problem you find there.

We wait.

I'll get on this after I figure out how to sign back on as myself. Windows is booting up into another ID, and I have no access to all my stuff. If I don't do this soon, please write something and remind me. I have my mind a bit cluttered, and the work you outline is WORK. I just don't want to do it until the other problem is resolved IF I can find the place to fix it.

by: xchangePosted on 2005-01-02 at 14:54:09ID: 12940629

>I have my mind a bit cluttered, and the work you outline is WORK
True, but it does not require your attention. You can leave your system updating, scanning, cleaning etc while you do something else.
>I just don't want to do it until the other problem is resolved...
But that's why you should do it, to rewsolve the problem in the first place.

by: Lindsay37Posted on 2005-01-02 at 16:13:37ID: 12940854

Okay, but I scan, defrag, poke, search, clean, use a dozen programs all the time. What more do I need to do? :) I have most things running daily or twice weekly or weekly. I then use Symantec in the drive to clean, search for all errors including Registry and fix them. I run its Clean Sweep. I run MY cleaner in Windows. Defrag is never less than a weekly affair. Spybot on board. Pest Patrol runs regularly. ZoneAlarm scans daily, updates daily with antivirus, spam, has great firewall and safeguards always running. Windows is updated as far as it can go currently. They still update now and then amazingly!

Sorry I really was cluttered. I was not real focused due to several simultaneous things here and outside of the computer going on. I know what you meant. I just didn't think about it until later. ;)

I really don't know what else to run here! Oh, I'm supposed to get inside the "manage" my computer thang and somehow get more info here after a reboot, right? Or was that one of my other questions? See, I'm now lost in three or four questionsl Most are either ignored or now resolved!

Thanks.

So basically, yo say you did #1 of my list.
Dit you try #2?

by: Lindsay37Posted on 2005-01-02 at 18:21:40ID: 12941110

I turned off the computer for quite a while (didn't need it). Rebooted and went into the Manage part of My Computer. Found the 6005 point and went to first error below as directed. It and many, many that follow are regarding DCOM: "Access denied...attempting to launch a DCOM Server." I know why. I have denied this so next time it comes up for vote I will allow it, and that will stop it (I hope).

I checked on Dhcp error (very few entries past two days). One said: "Computer autoconfigured/ P address for Network Card. Address 000........C6 IP address = 169.xxx.xxx.xxx" which I'm positive is my ISP's addy. I have seen that many times.

Browser error at 5 a.m. this morning: "Forced an election on network \Device\NetBT_Tcpip_ Cxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx (long number) because a master browser was stopped."

This type of entry was occurring while I had the Internet turned off with my firewall. I just disable it. Evidently this stuff just goes on and on whether it needs it or not. This thing IS set up as a server (I have never really understood that), but I'm sure it has to do with my DSL connection and the LAN thang, right? I'm not worried about any of this stuff, but what do I really know? I just think it "jams" when I reboot, or when I won't allow things to go out to the Internet (if I don't know what it is that IS the advice ZA gives), or when it's "sleeping" during long periods of inactivity. I don't mean I put the computer to sleep. I did long ago, but not for a long time now. It snoozes on its own I have been told. (It's a Dell Dimension 1999 model and still a great machine [lousy tech support which I'm glad I never use anymore].)

So if anyone has ideas, let me know. Otherwise I'll clear the logs and limit the number of days they are there as they are just HUGE.

One thing was interesting on down the line regarding MSWord. Said in all areas the program had not been started or was not installed (actually any part of Office was this way which is a false statement). It IS very much installed (all of Office 2000 is). So I booted up MSWord. It still was "not installed." Maybe I had to close out the manager and re-enter. Don't know.

Thanks.

>Along this line of thought (maybe) defrag just can't finish today. It bogs down about 1/3rd of the way. I has always done its job in about 1/2 hour or so. Not today. Something's slowing it.

Try then booting safe-mode, delete all the logs and see if you can defrag form there.
How does it go?

by: DanCh99Posted on 2005-01-03 at 13:36:42ID: 12947451

It sounds like some of the stuff here is a lot of effort for you right now and/or outside your comfort zone.  You may either want either someone to come and look at the pc itself, or you can email the System Log to me (check my profile for the address) and I'll have a quick look through.

to capture an event log, just right click the System Log in the left hand pane, and choose Save As.

You're doing lots of good stuff.  Personally I never defrag, but the rest is good.  Regarding Zone Alarm, if I launch a program (say a game/utility/browser etc), and immediately it asks for access, I grant it.  I figure that it's a direct response to a legitmate action that I've taken, and therefore nothing to worry about.

by: SheharyaarSaahilPosted on 2005-01-03 at 17:28:28ID: 12948954

Lindsay...... OK so we have many errors in the Event viewer...... regarding some unknown things!
But can you explain the "problems" going on your system...... i mean who initiated you to look at Event Viewer ??

And do you want me to write down the instructions for using Hijackthis at this stage or later? :)

by: Lindsay37Posted on 2005-01-03 at 18:11:40ID: 12949096

Hi all, I'm in no great difficulty at all. Windows and programs are smooth. Defrag made it just fine after a reboot.

Shehar, you can see the system problems as I stated above. Most are just same ole same ole and have to be because I have been denying programs/server going out on the Internet. I will stop that as of now. :)

You had once asked me to examine all of this so that was where I picked back up. There are no problems that bother me at all right now so perhaps I can just dump (or save) those logs.

I thought you wanted to see HiJack again so mentioned it. I just don't remember exactly how to get you to it when I run it. ;) That's about all I have at this time. Things are fine computerwise now! You've all just been great.

Thanks.

by: SheharyaarSaahilPosted on 2005-01-04 at 18:40:09ID: 12958911

hmmmm actually hijackthis can be used when there is any doubt of malwares\trojans...... and i think you will agree with me that all this was not looking like a suspisious matter..... was it?? ;-)

by: Lindsay37Posted on 2005-01-04 at 20:00:37ID: 12959243

Just wondered if I should run it again. You had me delete several things last time. I lost my notes. I apologize. Do we do it again? How?

Thankewe.

sure if you need...... :)
first get hijackthis from here >> http://tools.radiosplace.com/HijackThis.exe
Run it, save its log file, and then Post that log at this site >> http://www.hijackthis.de
now if you feel that you can deal with it..... then fix the nasty items..... otherwise you can hit analsye, scroll down to the bottom, hit Save Analyse, a new page will open..... and post here the address of that page instead of posting the whole log...... i'll go through it :

by: Lindsay37Posted on 2005-01-05 at 15:21:36ID: 12967668

Okay, I ran it twice. First time was so full of Logitech Desktop Messenger I got those off then scanned again.

I posted the log here: >>http://www.hijackthis.de/index.php<<

I don't know enough to clear out/fix other items.

Thanks Shehar.

by: SheharyaarSaahilPosted on 2005-01-05 at 15:25:18ID: 12967694

>> I don't know enough to clear out/fix other items.
then you can post the link here, just analyse your log there, then scroll down to the bottom, hit Save Analyse, a new page will open..... and post here the address of that page.... i will check it :)

by: Lindsay37Posted on 2005-01-05 at 15:31:47ID: 12967734

The analysis is at the link above. At least I can find it (I clicked on it just now). I don't know how to bring a website into this box without making it impossible to read. It's all code in HTML. OH! I'll see if I can find the "save" feature. It was not where I could see it. I did try to, but it seemed not to be there. I'll be back with new info asap. Sorry!

Lindsay..... its full of crap files! =(
what removal softwares have you installed on your system at present...... ??
and why are you using IE5 still.... i mean didn't you upgrade to IE6 SP1 :-?

by: Lindsay37Posted on 2005-01-05 at 16:53:17ID: 12968238

Shehar, I did everything (I mentioned this in the task scheduler question too) I was assigned (it IS in the task scheduler question posted by SystmProg...it's HUGE HUGE!). Well, I have done part. I could live here 24:7 for a week and maybe get out with all that work. I doubt I can ever make it all add up. It's a bit overwhelming due to the sheer volume of info and software to use. As for what's loaded, I'd have to go and look. Spybot is in there, but I disconnected it from the Start Tray as it really messes up Zone Alarm like crazy. I usually uninstall these other programs as soon as they do their job. Then I reinstall them if I want to see what's going on.

I.E. 5 is anyone's guess. I installed (well, the consultant did) Win2000Pro, and that has ever been there). Of course I run I.E. 6.0 with ALL its updates. I have the updater scheduled for once per week. I've never missed anything. It's very current, and we ran the I.E. fix program, remember. It's been fine since then.

I'll ask here also: Now what? I need to be sure task scheduler is all fixed, but I am not sure if some of the entries are "examples" and more teaching things or I am supposed to do something for each line in there (registry and some in Documents and Settings). I'll look that over again later tonight or tomorrow.

Not only am I going blind here (G) but I just went out to shoot sunset photos, and for a long time there was this large red area in front of my eyeballs! And it's COLD out there. Brrrrr!

So, tell me one step at a time here and in the other question exactly what I am to do and what I'm just to read. ;) Thankewe!

Lindsay

ok i have posted there...... dont mind but the infection is not so strong to try ALL of those tools, just Adaware, Spybot and hijackthis is enough :)

But first you follow the suggestion from the other question..... means running Adaware, Spybot in safemode!
then after that follow these instructions..... ok! :)

You need two tools before starting to clean the system, one is LSPFix >> http://www.spychecker.com/program/lspfix.html
second is New.net uninstaller >> http://www.new.net/support/uninstall5_48.exe

Then First disconnet from the internet, second close all the browser and explorer windows!
third run hiajckthis scan and hit scan, fourth, tick the following lines,

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {4A2AACF3-ADF6-11D5-98A9-00E018981B9E} - (no file)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Fdr Command Module] sp2.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Microsoft Update Manager] sbhost.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Microsoft Synchronization Manager] netscape.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Windows Media] syscont.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [windows update] winupdate.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Configuration Update] zweb.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [New.net Startup] rundll32 C:\PROGRA~1\NEWDOT~1\NEWDOT~2.DLL,NewDotNetStartup -s
O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [Fdr Command Module] sp2.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [Microsoft Update Manager] sbhost.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [Microsoft Synchronization Manager] netscape.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [Windows Media] syscont.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [windows update] winupdate.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [Configuration Update] zweb.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Fdr Command Module] sp2.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Microsoft Update Manager] sbhost.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Microsoft Synchronization Manager] netscape.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Windows Media] syscont.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Logitech Camera] Soundcane.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Configuration Update] zweb.exe
=============================================

and then click on Fix Checked!!
after that restart...... and boot in safemode..... run the New.net uninstaller program!
after it finishes, run LSPFix and if its listing any nasty file in the Remove column, you should remove it!
After doing this, delete the following files manually from your system!

C:\WINNT\system32\realplays.exe
C:\WINNT\system32\sp2.exe
C:\WINNT\system32\sbhost.exe
C:\WINNT\system32\netscape.exe
C:\WINNT\system32\syscont.exe
C:\WINNT\system32\zweb.exe
C:\WINNT\system32\realplays.exe
C:\WINNT\system32\sp2.exe
C:\WINNT\system32\sbhost.exe
C:\WINNT\system32\netscape.exe
C:\WINNT\system32\syscont.exe
C:\WINNT\system32\zweb.exe

Now run your antivirus scan once more to make sure its coming as clean now!
if yes then restart..... and login in Normal mode now and check what's the reuslt! :)

I "think" I've done everything. Just need feedback on the last hijacked info. It's getting smaller. ;)

I found my toolbar items. It was nuts. The items were checked but nothing showed (i.e., google, roboform, etc.). So I unchecked one, and they all popped up! Sheesh. Backwards thang. I had lost my Acrobat converter (I can copy a website and convert it into Adobe which is so nice if I need to share with someone or save for the future!). It came back on with the rest.

I still have to get Firefox and see what that's all about. (This may belong to the other question.) I swear the minute this line seems to be grinding down I am going to close it and not have to pop back and forth. I never meant for them to work out this way. I do apologize.

Thanks again for all the helps! I still have to study the thing on install/uninstall. I have both problems. The install.log is missing much of the time when I install upgrades or new software. I just wish there was a program to run and fix that.

by: Lindsay37Posted on 2005-01-07 at 15:28:23ID: 12989398

I tried to understand the installer error 1603. I read, clicked, looked, looked again, but I cannot quite figure it out. It seems to just be reports on what is going on and then goes into tech talk that I'm not completely understanding.

SOoooo. Corel's WordPerfect still resides and I can't uninstall it. If I knew EVERY word to search for on it I could spend an afternoon perhaps deleting in registry and Windows. I've done a little, but it's very tiresome. It runs right up to the end and almost does it and then POOF! MSI error every time and it rolls back leaving all that junk in there.

I also found nothing to help with "cannot locate install.log" which I see everytimg I try to upgrade (monthly) Zone Alarm.

I have to wait for summations on both of my questions and maybe the OE problem too as that program doesn't fix the error message when I shut OE down.

To sum up: I have three open questions and nothing is quite finished, and I'm not sure I know how to fix everything. I've left the hijack log above (or in the Task Scheduler...I am now mixing this up). Cannot delete syscont, sp2 or zweb (zweb belongs to Zone Alarm).
What I would REALLY appreciate is for someone to read quickly through each of the open questions and at the bottom of each tell/ask what needs to be done or explain so that I do understand. I do best when I know what I'm doing! ;) (No duh!!!) This way I have this "unfinished" feeling and one of "what on earth is/was that?" ;)

I have probably done 8 -90% of anything asked including a LOT of registry "look/see" but in some cases I could go, but I didn't know what I was looking for. Start items are as they should be. I can't find where QuickTime is loading, however. Not found.

Thanks. Sorry for ALL the stuff here, but I'd love to do something else pretty soon here. ;) (Seriously, I have a manuscript coming in and need to clear my desk and problems as rapidly as possible....we can finish over the weekend perhaps for now.) I can run the scans again (safe mode or not?) so as to see what's left. Stinger seemed to find the most errors!

Truly appreciate all these wonderful helps! You're all the best.

Lindsay..... let's complete the hjt matter first..... can you post a new link with a fresh log from the present time...... remember to post the link only..... not the whole log..... once it can be confirmed that system is clean..... we will work on other problems one by one..... ok :)

by: Lindsay37Posted on 2005-01-07 at 22:30:50ID: 12991030

Shehar, somehow most of this went over to the Task Scheduler question. Hijack is over there. I have run more virus/trojan scans and cleaned up even more, but I think that log is about what things are.

I CAN run it again, but I've now done it three times. ;) The latest is last night.

Again, I'm sorry these two questions merged somehow. We should get them all in one so as not to confuse us all.

Thanks.

ok then we quit here and work there...... once that will over..... we will come back here..... is it ok? :)

I was thinking more along the lines of closing both down and I restart with specific questions because these have all become very confusing to me. I go looking in all places. Why don't I "just do it"?

Let me know as the last thing I want to do is make this hard for any of you, but I'm simply lost in ALL the notes. I have the really important stuff copied over into notepad so I can access links and so for whenever I need to.

I'm way too verbose. I need to simplify! I'll await your answer. Thanks.

you can ask to close this question and all other opened and unresolved question in Support area..... they will delete them all and will refund your points..... then you will be able to start a single thread from scratch! :)

See the "Task Scheduler" where I answered you how I feel. :) html#12994704 (taken from the notice in e-mail just now.

and you can use my same suggestion from there on here also! ;-)

by: Lindsay37Posted on 2005-01-08 at 19:20:55ID: 12995271

Got it. I closed the other one. After I unjumble my thoughts (G) I'll set up one question to cover perhaps several issues since we seemed to do that anyway!

Thank all you.

P.S. And I just got a virus with a siren blowing and all. Sheesh! That "realplays" that I delete but somehow gets back is infected AGAIN!

Where's my shotgun?

by: SheharyaarSaahilPosted on 2005-01-08 at 19:52:48ID: 12995337

>> Where's my shotgun?
no use....... you need a BOMB to blast it! :-P

by: Lindsay37Posted on 2005-01-08 at 21:01:54ID: 12995441

Yeah, I need a BIG BOMB! I just came up in safe mode and deleted realplays.ext AGAIN. It's got more lives than ten cats!

I'm gonna close this, not because it's not great, because it's huge, and I get lost. I may try to print it all out (duplex for sure!). Then I believe there are several questions within the question or within a few questions. Notice how I will ask one thing, we go after it. I then get four answers or whatever. I do all the stuff. I post the results. Soon there are a lot more answers, and I ask a bunch of questions, and the rest is history. You guys are just too fast (and maybe I'm just a wee bit slow?

I can convert this into Acrobat (I did that to the other one). Makes it really nice to have it exactly as it appears here active links and all. I should have purchased Acrobat a LONG time ago! What a tool.
