Question

Enable Quick launch with group policy

Asked by: jering

We are just about to roll out XP Pro with SP2 as our new SOE, we have locked
 down the desktop for all users apart from the few that have local Admin rig
hts.

By default, the Quick Launch bar is not there when you first log in, as a us
er with Administrator priv, I can go into properties of the "Task and Start
menu" and turn it on.  But normal users who are locked down by security poli
cies do not have that luxury.

Can some one tell me how I can have "Quick Launch" enabled for all our users
 via Group Policy or as a registry hack rather than relaxing the current Gro
up Policies that we have in place.

Thanks.

Have a look at IconZone :-

enabling and disabling through Registry and then creating a bath file to run through Group Policy :-

or disable "Enable Classic Shell" in Group Policy to enable Quick Luanch.
from this container :-

User Configuration\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Windows Explorer

and you will find in Right Pane.

I`m sorry, but I posted in the wrong forum. The OS I`m talking about is Win XP. I`ve got Win 2000 Server, but have imported the policies from Windows Server 2003.

I`ve enabled "Classic start menu" through a gp. And now I want the Quick Launch to be enabled.

PS: Maybe a moderator could move this thread to the Win XP forum?

by: SystmProgPosted on 2005-01-06 at 02:09:33ID: 12970547

"Enable Classic Shell"

You need to DISABLE it not ENABLE :-)

by: jeringPosted on 2005-01-06 at 02:33:07ID: 12970656

But I don`t want the new XP-start menu, I want the classic one, with the quick launch enabled.

by: SystmProgPosted on 2005-01-06 at 02:52:15ID: 12970759

ok

You can remove/add the quick launch icons by setting the following registry entry to 0 and 1.

1 = Enable
0 = Disable

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer\ClassicShell

If the icons are missing and you want them, simply delete the above value.

You need to create a batch file to process this value through Group Policy [ either Login Script or Run these programs ]

Create a .REG file and put the following contents in it :-

From here :-

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\policies\Explorer]
"ShowSuperHidden"=dword:00000001
"ClassicShell"="1"

Upto Here :-

by: jeringPosted on 2005-01-06 at 03:13:23ID: 12970855

I put this in a file called quick_launch.reg:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\policies\Explorer]
"ShowSuperHidden"=dword:00000001
"ClassicShell"="1"

And called it from quick_launch.bat

I created a test-user which runs quick_launch.reg when he logs on.

But the quick launch is still missing...

http://home.no.net/thunderb/quick_launch.bat

Isn`t these right?

When I log on the Start menu is classic, but the quick launch menu isn`t there...

by: SystmProgPosted on 2005-01-06 at 05:15:35ID: 12971557

Yeah its correct

you need to include one more command in batch file.

Secedit /refreshpolicy user_policy
Secedit /refreshpolicy machine_policy

Post back :-)

by: jeringPosted on 2005-01-06 at 05:23:27ID: 12971614

I found out that secedit is replaced with gpupdate:

quick_launch.reg
gpupdate /target:computer
gpupdate /target:user

The script ran fine telling that the gp`s was updated, but the quick launch is still missing...

This doesn't seem to be a simple registry setting.
You can download a zip file here that contains (among other tweaks) a registry entry to enable the QL bar on XP: http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=27911
And according to this thread: http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?act=ST&f=34&t=21941, this tweak needs to be applied when explorer is *not* running, as otherwise you'll lose the setting when shutting down.
Good luck.

If that's what you found in the archive, then that might work. Note the other thread: you seem to have to apply this in the HKCU's RunOnce key to keep the setting permanent. It could work as well if you open the task manager, kill explorer.exe, start regedit with the file above from task manager's file menu, and then start Explorer again from the task manager's file menu as well; but I haven't tested either solution.
Try it with a test account; if this messes up things, all you have to do is delete the test user's profile.
On the other hand, if you haven't rolled out the machines yet, you also have the option of creating a profile that has the QL bar enabled (and all the other settings you want as default), and use this as default profile for new users logging in. Have a look here:

I`ve tried it twice. All settings except the quick launch-enabling works. I really don`t understand why the quick launch is such a headache...
