The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Hard drive not recognized

Asked by Chatable in Windows 2000 Operating System

Hello,
My computer has a promise IDE card, which together with the motherboard IDE controller, gives me 4 IDE channels, each supporting 2 devices - 8 devices max.
I used to have only 4 devices -
1) 40GB Maxtor Hard-Drive
2) 200GB WD Hard-Drive (This is why I got the promise card - My BIOS won't recognize cards over 137GB)
3) DVD-ROM
4) CD-Writer
Recently I installed a new IDE-based flash reader. The new drive is recognized just fine, however, my system stopped recogninzing the 200GB WD drive. Almost all my files are stored on that drive. HELP!
Some interesting things I noticed -
1) The problematic drive does show up in the Device Manager (under Disk Drives). It does not however show up in the Disk Management snap-in, neither does it have an associated drive letter.
2) When I boot my system to DOS, it does give me access to the drive.
Some issue that might or might not be of relevance - Due to problems with the length of the IDE cable I'm temporarily using a 40-conductor IDE cable for the Hard-Drives. I know it slows them down - but is there any reason for a large 200GB hard-drive not to work at all with those cables?
