Question

Group Policy - Offline Files - Want to stop synchronization

Asked by: BuckChrisBuck

Hi,

I have a 100 user network and since I redirected everyones "my documents" folder to a network drive, every machine synchronizes when they log off.
The servers are win2k and all the pcs are win2k.
I want to stop synchronization. Simple you might think (and maybe it is but I cannot find the answer).
I have searched high and low on MS blogs and generally and everyone has problems and resolutions to make these things work but noone wants to stop them!
Win2k has an "offline files enabled" policy which is set to "disabled" and I have been through the other 30 or so policies in the user config and the computer config and set them to what I see as appropriate.
I have tested the policies by switching off other menu options (run command) and this works fine.

I HAVE READ ALL THE DOCUMENTS ON HOW TO SET UP OFFLINE FILES SO PLEASE DON'T JUST REFER ME TO THEM - I DON'T WANT TO SET IT UP I WANT TO BREAK IT DOWN!

Thanks in advance for your comments

What do you mean by Stop Syncrhronization?
Did you set Offline Files on My Document folders?
What is your ultimate goal to this so that we can give some different idea?

You have already set policy settings in Group Policy for Offline-Files. Did you force this setting on all machines using Secedit /refreshpolicy user_Policy command?

Hi Systmprog,
Currently everyone who logs on to the network has the entire group share synchronized when they log off. This takes ages. The reason for this seems to be linked with my redirection of their "mydocuments" folder (for example if they are in the accounts security group then their my docuyments folder redirects to the accounts share on the network) - nice and tidy. But then when they log off they synchronize.
If I manually untick the shares it is trying to sync on the local PC settings then it does not sync any more. I want to make it not sync via policies. I have not (knowlingly) set offline files on anything - but from reading stuff on the web it would appear that it gets set on by default?

Thanks

Chris

Hi,
I have not doen this but other polices I have set have made it to the client I am trialling this on so I anticipate that this one has - especially since one of the other settings from within offline files has taken effect  stopping me from making some changes to the offline files themselves

OK.
I have answered this myself.
If you right click on the network shares and choose
right click properties, sharing, caching
Now switch caching off.
I don't know if there is a bug with win2k policies but you should be able to just disable the machine policy to stop offline synchronizing - I couldn't get it to work (even once I had my hierarchy correct!)
Thanks for your efforts guys
Chris
