Question

Windows 2000 startup problems

Asked by: sherilewis

I have upgraded the Motherboard only on my Computer.  I am running Windows 2000 Svc Pk 4.  I believe all updates have been applied through Windows Updates.

I have had to go through and "Repair" the Windows 2000 twice for isssues of it hanging in the startup phase; one of the main problems was when it was Applying the Networking Settings.  The last repair fixed this.  Then I rebooted and it hangs on Applying Security Settings.  I have tried a normal repair and it doesn't fix it.

Do you have more suggestions, even if they are detailed and not quick?

Your help would be appreciated!

Reinstall Windows.

Windows 2000 and XP (and to a somewhat lesser extent, all other versions of Windows) do not take kindly to new system boards that are NOT based on the same motherboard chipset as the previous board.  If a repair install fails to fix it, then your option is to put back the old mainboard OR reinstall your computer.

To be clear, I mean backup the disk, and reinstall a FRESH copy of Windows.  If you have a copy of Windows XP, you can make yourself a BartPE boot CD and then what I do is rename the existing C:\WINDOWS (WINNT), C:\PROGRAM FILES, and C:\DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS folders.  Then I can do a fresh install without formatting and losing data.

will I have to reinstall the actual Program files from the original CDs (each and every one of them)??

Yes.  While the programs themselves may be on the system, the registries - where important settings information is stored - cannot be completely reincorporated.  You MIGHT be able to recover some aspects, but the more you try to recover things like settings, the more headaches you're likely to have.  Whenever I get a new system, I take that as an opportunity to clean out the computer of junk that may have gotten installed over the months since I last installed it.  I typically don't let a Windows installation live more than 12-18 months - and I have more software installed than most.

Some people like imaging a system - I don't generally because in 12-18 months when I'd reinstall, half the image is outdated software, so I just reinstall from scratch.

I already hit ACCEPT on this question but if you could tell me one more thing to help me with clean up.
After I rename the 3 folders you mentioned above, install a clean version of Windows 2000 - can install Service Pak 4 (is it all inclusive of 1 - 3) or do I have to install each service pak one at a time?

In regards to installation of programs - can I delete the original folders of the 3 mentioned above and then install programs, then also delete the copies after I have backed them up on an external hard drive that I have?

I want a clean install and have programs that I no longer use so I understand cleaning up the computer.  I am trying to make this as headache free as possible since I have spent much time trying to repair Windows 2000 after the Motherboard and drivers installation.

Thanks for your help.

All microsoft "Service Packs" have been historically all inclusive.  So you can just install SP4 and it covers you for 1,2, and 3.

Just for future reference, MOST of the time, you can upgrade/add hardware.  Graphics cards, network cards, hard drives, etc, can be added or replaced.  (With hard drives, if replacing the C: drive, you need to be sure you use the same type of drive (Replace ATA with ATA, SATA with SATA, SCSI with SCSI.  You can add a SATA hard drive to a system that boots off the ATA hard drive, but REPLACING the C: drive with a drive that is not of the same technology will usually have problems (POSSIBLY fixed with a repair install).  The one area you will ALMOST always have problems with is replacing motherboards because there is SO many support services and drivers on that board that windows needs to use to run.

What I typically do is RENAME the items I mentioned (I ALWAYS rename and don't delete until I'm absolutely 100% certain I won't need the old files).  I'll often leave the old install files available for 3-6 months to be certain.  You can often recover drivers from the old install, BUT, I advise trying to download them instead from your system or parts manufacturers.  It's usually better to get current, updated drivers for things and not reuse something that might be old and has to be installed in a non-standard way.  If you have problems with drivers, open a new question (post back here to get my attention) and I'll try to help you on that one.
