Question

Windows 2000 Server Terminal Services Question

Asked by: ryanwhalen

Hi all,

We have a Win2k terminal server that we use to remotely manage devices on the LAN it is connected to.  We leave one session running with some diagnostic software (similar to whats up gold), so it is running in the background...when we login to the TS, it connects back to that session...works great.

However, if the session is interrupted and disconnected improperly, a new TS session is created.  This isn't too big of a deal because I can simply go to the Terminal Services Management console and connect to the other session.

The problem is, sometimes another administrator logs in, and improperly disconnects...so there are times when there are 2 existing connections "disconnected" on the server, and I am unable to log in due to too many logged in users.

There is no KB/Mouse connected to the server, and it is in a remote location.  Is there another way to reset the TS sessions, other than having someone on-site reboot the server?

Manage My Computer
Go to local users and groups
users
properties on a user
go to the sessions tab
there are options there for disconnects if idle, active session limit and disconnected sessions....

You will have to wait for the sessions to become idle and get disconnected.. but it's better than a reboot and physical access, you can set it to something like 5 minutes so it's not to bad of a wait.... this will log off users after 5 minutes of inactivity and another user can come in...

Right...I knew about the settings, but as for right now....I am locked out of the TS.  Is there any way other than rebooting the server to be able to log in (other than hooking up a KB/Mouse/Monitor).  Its not on a domain and is a standalone box.

by: ryanwhalenPosted on 2006-01-26 at 08:18:22ID: 15796434

The thing is that I want my session to stay logged in even after I disconnect (click the "X" for instance).  This is because the monitoring software is running under that username, and not as a service.

When I lose my internet connection, however, it disconnects that session and when I log in with the same user/pass, it creates a new session.  I want it to just log back into the "disconnected" session rather than make a new one.

Sorry, don't believe you can reconnect to a disconnected session, if you could it would be a security problem.

Although, you might try logging in locally, and locking the workstation/server. Then remoting in, that might work.

No marbles on the command listed above.  I get the login prompt but still get the error message about too many open sessions.
