Browse All TopicsBecause of virus/worm problems, I need to re-format my hard drive and re-install Win2k.
But I can never seem to get to where it asks if I want to re-format the drive. If I go down the path that says I want to install a fresh copy of the OS, or upgrade, and I choose fresh copy, it'll ask me if I want to repair the current OS or continue with a fresh. No matter which option I choose, it doesn't give me a chance to re-format the drive.
How do I get to the re-format function?
Thanks for any help

this website explains how to delete a partition and create a new one : http://www-w2k.eecs.berkel
Hey zephyr, thanks for the info. I'm quite sure I have actually done that at least once (i.e., deleted a partition, then re-formatted), and this jarred my memory.
However, this time when I try it, I get nowhere. When I get to the place where it says "To delete the selected partition, press D" absolutely nothing happens when I press D.
Any clue what's going on here?
Thanks
Lee
are there any partitions listed in the list of partitions or does it show unpartitioned space? if you've already done it before, then do C to create a partition. then format occurs after that
if you do have a partition showing and yet nothing happens when you press D to delete it, you may want to try fdisk instead. http://www.fdisk.com/fdisk
i usually will run a hardware scan on a hard drive before doing this, to verify i am not dealing with a bad drive (which could cause issues when trying to install the OS). seagate makes a hard drive diag for their drives, which is free (seatools desktop): http://www.seagate.com/sup
if you dont have a seagate drive, try something like DFT (drive fitness test), which is also free: http://www.hitachigst.com/
one more question... is there a reason why you are taking this drastic method (wiping the drive) instead of doing virus/spyware removal? it is pretty rare that the free tools for virus/spyware removal do not fix the problem. if you decide to do virus/spyware removal instead of wiping the drive, you can get a free virus scanner at : http://free.grisoft.com/do
and then lots of spyware tools plus instructions here: http://forums.majorgeeks.c
some of those tools will not run on windows 2000, but many of them will. if you are trying to remove spyware and get stuck, just post your problem. hope this helps.
Hi Zeph,
1. I'm taking this drastic action because my ISP has continually found over the past several months that spam is coming from my computer--even though I faithfully do virus scans, etc. So the last time they called me they requested that I re-format and then install a hardware firewall.
2. I wasn't able to get fdisk to work, so I took my drive to another computer and formatted it. I've now installed a fresh copy of W2k, so I'm all set.
3. I appreciate your intelligent responses, and am accepting your last comment as the answer.
Cheers

delete your partition and then create a new one. it will then format. you will lose all info on the computer.
