Question

Can't delete registry key...Error while deleting key

Asked by: craigceg

This computer had some nasty malware which has been removed, but the only piece left is 4 registry entries that I am not able to remove (ewido found them but was not able to remove them either).

I run regedt32 (in safe mode or normal mode) and and have checked the permissions but am still unable to delete them. The permissions are "full control" , yet when I go to "effective permissions" it doesn't show any. I am able to get the "effective permissions" to show all permissions with checkmarks, but when I save and close it, the permissions do not stay.

The key's are:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\ToolbarBestToolsbarsToolbar.BestToolbarsToolbarObject
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\ToolbarBestToolsbarsToolbar.BestToolbarsToolbarObject.1
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\CLASSES\ToolbarBestToolsbarsToolbar.BestToolbarsToolbarObject
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\CLASSES\ToolbarBestToolsbarsToolbar.BestToolbarsToolbarObject.1

Any suggestions?

If you have msconfig......Click Start, Run, Type msconfig and then press enter.  Click on the services tab and hide all microsoft services.  See if there are any unrecognized services starting up and if there is then take the check out.  Click the startup tab and take out anything you don't need (leaving antivirus and such)   and reboot and then try again on deleting the keys.  If you don't have msconfig you can download the XP version it will run on windows 2000.  You can get that here:
http://www.perfectdrivers.com/howto/msconfig.html

I would also download and run adaware and spybot.  You can get them at www.download.com.

I would try to boot to a Bart CD and then run regedit from within there and see if you can then delete the keys.  Here is a link to where you can find out about Bart:

Agree to the service thing. You can use 'RegMon' (http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/Regmon.html) to see what other processes are accessing these registry keys, once the culprit is identified, it shouldn't be hard to stop and remove it. Also check out http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/RegDelNull.html

I will try both of your suggestions when I get home from work. I have already run Spybot. Adaware, Ewido, Hijackthis, Panda online etc. The system comes up clean. It just registry keys problem. I am not able to complete XP Service Pack 2 update. It comes up with problems backing up different registry keys than the ones listed above. So the registry is definately a problem.

I see now that I posted in the wrong area, I'm actually running Windows XP Home. Should I ask for this question to be moved?

That's up to you.  Usually the solution won't be very different.  I would suggest trying the things that have been mentioned so far and if that doesn't help then move it.

The reason why you are unable to [Delete] these keys is because the primary keys have already been [Deleted]
Since this has happened, you have lost access to this Registry Keys.

I suggest that you Download and run: RegSeeker  (Free)
Information: http://www.hoverdesk.net/freeware.htm
Download: http://www.hoverdesk.net/dl/en/RegSeeker.zip

Run the program and choose: [Find in Registry]
And type in: ToolbarBestToolsbarsToolbar

Once these Items are Found, click on: [Select All]
Then Right-Click in the Window and Choose [Delete]
--------------
After this is done, I strongly Suggest to Run:  [Clean the Registry]
Once everything is found,
Choose [Select All]
Then Right-Click and choose [Delete]

Good luck with it.

Carrzkiss - regseeker allowed me to delete the offending registry keys and move on to solve the rest of the problems.

Jkr and mistymisty - I had tried all of your suggestions prior to posting the original question ( should have been more specific when I said "This computer had some nasty malware which has been removed").

Thank you all for your input.

Regards,

Craig
