The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

W2K Event ID 7000 RPC fails, can't see event ID or Service Properties, network connections empty

Asked by jhanks64 in Windows 2000 Operating System

Two different clients, both running Windows 2000 Pro SP4.  One is a Dell Latitude and one is a generic PC.

The PC happened yesterday and the Latitude just today.

Mutliple errors in event log, 7000 and 7001.  I can not look at the errors, have to export and open on another computer.

Network and Dial-up connections is empty
Add/Remove programs is empty

Device Manager shows everything just fine.

Safe Mode does work, but still can't view event ID or service properties

I ran AVG virus scan and Spy Sweeper on the HD, hooked up to another computer, nothing strange found
I did notice an event log entry on my test computer saying there was a problem with the HD.  I then used DriveCopy and copied it to a new drive.  The Repair/Upgrade fixes I've tried are on the new drive.

I booted from the W2K CD and did a repair (it was SP3), still no fix, then I used an OEM SP4 CD and did an upgrade.  Still no fix.

Most services seem to fail because of being dependent upon RPC.

Here are a couple of the Event IDs:
7000, Service Control Manager:
The Remote Procedure Call (RPC) service failed to start due to the following error:
The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process.

7001, Service Control Manager:
The Telephony service depends on the Remote Procedure Call (RPC) service which failed to start because of the following error:
The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process.

I'm completely frustrated, why two computers and why at the same time?

On the PC, earlier in the day, I see many of these events:
10009, DCOM
DCOM was unable to communicate with the computer 193.16.213.222 using any of the configured protocols.

Any other suggestions?

John

These are both Stand-Alone, not part of a domain, the PC is networked with another PC and shares it's dialup connection.  The Laptop uses Docking Station/NIC through Shared Comcast at the office and dialup at home.Start Free Trial
