Please help ! Urgent !Windows 2000 could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \WINNT\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM

Hi Expert ! I am getting an error message at start up "WINNT\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM" . I try to use a CD to do  a repair but I am not familiar with recovery console command and emergency repair disk was not created ! Could you please help me how to workaround this issue as I need to retreive my files and email ? Thanks for any suggestion !

also, though i am a fan of getting things back up and running with the procedure supplied, from experience, backup everything and wipe you machine after, it wont be the same again

Jay, the idea of backing up while you can not even load OS is very complicated. The procedure given above doesnt need to reinstall OS. What is done there is to repair some few files Ntldr,Ntdetect.com, Boot.ini and Ntbootdd.sys using bootdisk.

It is simple and effective.

i know and i am backing you up on that one, i am just sayin after the fix, it is worth rebuilding, i have used that fix plenty of times, you have my 100% support on it!

Hi!
To start the computer and use the Recovery Console
From the Setup CD-ROM

Insert the Setup compact disc (CD) and restart the computer. If prompted, select any options required to boot from the CD.
When the text-based part of Setup begins, follow the prompts; choose the repair or recover option by pressing R.
If you have a dual-boot or multiple-boot system, choose the installation that you need to access from the Recovery Console.
When prompted, type the Administrator password.

ur WINNT\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM file is corrupted.Backup of this file is already placed in the repair folder.Do this exactly
copy C:\winnt\repair\system  c:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM

Than it will prompt for overright say yes

Hi All,

Thanks for all quick response . I tried all suggestion but no luck . I did reinstall an OS with option leave a current as a way it is , i can't remember exactly but something like that . Then we went through all installation process . I got my profile and my files so that I was able to retrieve all information that I need. Thanks To All
