Question

register Workstation on DIff Domian

Asked by: amir321

Hi freinds
I am having some questions.

My boss has 3 company and all 3 company has independent network and domain. For example his workstation is registerd on COmpany 1 and what he want now is to regsterd his WorkStation on company 2 and 3 so he can use all right as he is member of the domain.

As i know it's not possible to register on more then one domain same WS. So my question is is there any way to Access network or domain in the way that you are registerd on the domain.

All what i know is that in the username box when windows start i can write username@domian and then password but i don't know wether i can access network in same way as i am resgiterd on domain.

The workstations are win2000 and XP
and domain is windows 2000 server

amir

You can create trrusts between the existing domains and in that way, he'll have the option of logging in to any of the three.

As an alternative, you can get the program NetSwitcher which will allow you to join each of the three domains.   www.netswitcher.com

Another alternative - setup Virtual PC or VMWare and 2 other copies of Windows XP Pro - use a different Windows install for each domain.

Another alternative - multi-boot - install two more copies of XP into different folders - for example C:\WINDOWS.D1, C:\WINDOWS.D2, C:\WINDOWS.D3

lastly, he can connect to any domain server/resource by simply specifying his username and account, domainname\username and then entering the appropriate password for that account.

Hi leew
Thank you very much foir your comment.
sorry Trust is not pssoble to make it bcz othe rpartner don't want it. Netswitcher i will have a look bcz it's third party tool and it cost also.
And they don't wanna have 3 times windows installed on there laptop(WS).

and the last idea you gave me that what i was also thinking but i will have to try it.

regards
amir

Yes, NetSwitcher cost - under $20 US.  Don't know what exchange rate you have there - or if you're from the US - but $20 for this software is really not much.  And I believe there's a trial - so buy it only if it works.

Hi leew

I tryed to logon from laptop which is registerd in company1 and i try to log on company2 i typer username@domian.local and then password and i get error "This system can't not log on you the domain is not available"

by: sabby447Posted on 2006-09-15 at 05:39:55ID: 17528882

My question's are :

1. Are all the companies on the same network ?
If yes then what all services you require like exploring network for file, working with specific application or accessing database??

If you just require to explore network neighbourhood then you can do that very well by using IP Address and specifying the username and password.

or elsewise it is virtually not possible to have the workstation attached to multiple domains at the same time in microsoft way ..

by: amir321Posted on 2006-09-15 at 06:08:08ID: 17529054

No all company has diff network and diff domain and are not connected to each other.

What i wanted to do is i have regsiterd laptop on Company1 and then i went to company2 and i don't wanna register again there to access my network in company2 so i plug laptop in company2 network and my laptop got IP address and all setting from company2 DHCP and then i wanted to logon on my laptoop using user name and password from company2 so i typed in username user@company2.local and password in password

(what happen at mean time when i type @symbole then domain was invisible from domain box and then i wanted to logon but i got error "Can't log on the network there is no domain available")

All what i want is to access the my profile and usersetting from all comany in same PC don't wanna register and deregister everywere.

regards
amir

You can't do it. To access different profiles in different domains you must be a member of the domain.

leew / rickhobbs:  I ascede to your guys better judgement but...

would three nic cards and three running instances of Virtual Machine get this done?  (
(Although I know you would still have to traverse thru the VMs to acccess each corp domain.)

I object - just because he doesn't like the solutions doesn't mean he didn't get any. In my first comment I provided several - quoting myself:

You can create trrusts between the existing domains and in that way, he'll have the option of logging in to any of the three.

As an alternative, you can get the program NetSwitcher which will allow you to join each of the three domains.   www.netswitcher.com

> lastly, he can connect to any domain server/resource by simply specifying his username
> and account, domainname\username and then entering the appropriate password for
> that account.

To be clear - I didn't say log on to the computer using username@domainname.local - I said he can connect to any "domain server/resource" by using "domainname\username" - This was not to imply he could log on that way - but rather that he could, ONCE LOGGED ON, connect to a server/domain resource by providing a valid domain username and password combination for that domain.

I still think though, for $20 if this will save him 30 seconds a day, then .5 minutes/day times 200 work days in a year, that's 100 minutes... If his work makes him $50 an hour, then a return on investment would be seen in less than 3 months...

I have to agree with leew.  He provided exactly what was requested.

Well freinds first of all Point doens't matter for me all what i want is solution:

As i told you my Boss don't want third party soltuion i tryed netswitcher it's very complicated for users and he delete existing domain.

And Installing 2 or 3 system for booting for diff domain it's not a good idea.

And my boss don't want any trust because all 3 companys are  diff  all what is comman in the company is few investors  who have User account in all company.

And i tryed also to put username@domain.local and then password but i get error can't login not network available.

So tell me what shall i do ...

And we  have lot of services also with diff server i can't tell my Boss ok click on any server and if you are asked for password please typer domain/user and then password and you will have access.

by: amir321Posted on 2006-09-24 at 23:57:33ID: 17590125

ALl what i want is simple typing username and password and accessing whole network.

by: leewPosted on 2006-09-25 at 00:12:28ID: 17590170

I'm sorry you don't like the options and feel your boss can't handle some of them.  The only other semi-realistic option you have is to hire a programmer or few and write your own program that will do this.

You may want a solution that's simple and easy - but Windows wasn't designed to work the way you want it to.

Sometimes your answer is "it can't be done the way you want it to" (right now).  In this case, that's your answer.

Actually, the idea of different Virtual Machines is intruiging and may be worth a try.
