Probably not - you're best bet is to restore from backup.

Or you could tell us what happens when you try to boot it.

certainly interested in that outcome as well....my gut feeling is no but on the other hand it "shouldn't" wipe out AD

When I boot, POST shows that the Raid Array controller cache battery is bad,  the Controller cache is disabled.
HP Proliant tech support says this should not be a problem,  and another tech says it is the problem.
They are sending a new battery, since it needs to be replaced any way.

When I try to boot, I eventually get a Blue Screen of Death,  Inaccessible_Boot_Device.
When I try to boot to Safe Mode Command Prompt,  the systems pauses at MUP.sys for about 20 seconds.
then I get a BSOD, Inaccessible_Boot_Device.

This is a Proliant ML370 Server, with a Smart Array 642 Raid controller.

Reading similar problems with MUP.SYS and Win2k not booting, I feel some hardware component like PCI cards, USB devices, CDRoms can all cause Win2k to boot.  I have removed devices but this does not change a thing.

Of course the customer does not have a backup plan in place for Active Directory (DUH) and now the customer wants me to pull some magic out of the air.

If the cache controller battery does not work,  I think I can only repair Win2k and see if Active Directory is still intact.
Goodness gracious, what can I do?

Well, first, before you decide to try what I think is unwise (I'd certainly never try it FIRST on a production machine) and do a repair install (which also shouldn't repair any non-MS drivers), you should try to image the drive (get a copy of Acronis True Image, for example).

Now, again I think you're going about this all wrong.

First, have you seen these links?:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/824288

Second, what is the exact error message - I suspect it's a STOP 0x0000007A, but if it's not, you need to post that - AND the 4 parameters that appear after - AND any other file names on the screen.

Rather then repair installing and POSSIBLY losing the AD, I would suggest you create a PARALLEL install - install 2000 into C:\WIN2K instead of C:\WINNT.

Also, make yourself a bartPE and/or UltimateBoot CD for Windows and boot to that.  Also, get yourself a copy of Knoppix and boot to that - why?  Because these NON-INSTALLED Operating systems will probably crash or at least fail to read the drive if you're having hardware issues (I really doubt the battery thing is an issue too).

There are ways to troubleshoot this and get it working without a reinstall... but if you're not going to be able to work on the system regularly, you may not have much choice - if we're not around when you are, you're out of luck.

Thank you leew.

The blue screen has STOP:0x0000007B (0x85CD6910, 0xC0000032, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)
No file names are on the screen.

If I do the parallel install, will Active Directory still be functional?
