The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Ok.

I'm putting Win2k onto a SATA drive.  The MoBo has the latest bios (oct 2006).  I used Nlite to slipstream SP4 into the install, along with both the text mode and PNP versions of the SATA drivers.  The drive in question is a Maxtor SATAII 320gb drive.  The MOBO is SATA1, so the jumper is installed.

I boot the win2k install CD.  It detects a "130gb" drive.  Now, I know win2k won't install on anything over 130gb. but I figure that I'll be able to resize the partition / reclaim the space with a partition manager.  I tell windows to make a 90gb partition, format it NTFS, and away we go.  Installation completes.  Install ALL the microsoft updates (like 50 gb of them...), video drivers, etc.; and confirm that I have the latest VIA drivers for the mobo. Sata is set up in IDE mode.  The MOBO is P4M800PRO-M (V2.0), incase that rings any alarms.

Partition GUI shows 90gb partition, 40gb "unallocated"

I go to partition magic from a boot disk.  It sees the partition as 90gb / 202gb unallocated.
I create an extended partition to use the 202gb.

Reboot to windows, it gets 2/3 of the way through the boot, then gives me  "inaccessable_boot_device" error.

So, I start over.  This time I create the partitions up front from scratch, before installing windows.
I get very odd 'partitions' displayed when I get to that screen in the windows text mode setup.

I've done many iterations / variations of this over the past couple of days... I'm pulling out my last gray hair.
What am I missing?

I really don't want to have to install the OS on an 80gb IDE drive...
