You need to use the "Discover" function on WinInstall. Open WinInstall - Right click on Windows Installer Packages in the console tree - click "Run Discover"

This will take a snapshot of your system BEFORE you install the update. Once it's finished with the "clean" shot it will prompt you to run the installation. After you've completed the install you'll need to run the discovery again and it will prompt you to choose the "after" snapshot. It essentially takes the difference between these two images and creates the .msi file. If I were you I would use the cleanest machine you've got to do the .msi package creation.

I've only done this using XP - not sure if there are any complications with Windows 2000.

ok 1 question...

im running win xp pro sp2 and i have a very high spec laptop, but some of my users are on less spec machines... with the clean shot been taken from my machine, will it affect the installation on the other machine?

do i have to install the update on my machine first? - as i don't actually have the software that the update is for on my machine...

by: SystmProgPosted on 2007-01-26 at 05:40:36ID: 18403868

Not at all - WinInstLE is independent of any hardware configuration.

Update your machine > and then take snapshot.

this is probably an off topic question, but when happens if a user on my network isnt up to date on patches?

take this example:

the update i have or that im creating the .msi from is "update 5".  what happens if 1 of my users is still on "update 3", will the GP recognise this and not install it on that users machine?
