How to restore user profiles

Hi,
One of our machines suddenly "lost" it's user profile, to be more accurate it has abandoned the "user" and created a "user.MAIN" profile which is a brand new profile and means that all settings are lost, and this includes some settings in the registry. Is there a way to force Windows to go back and use the original profile?
