Pagefile missing or to small

Asked by coral47 in Windows 2000 Operating System

W2K Pro sp4

I was cloning my HD last night with a  program on a boot CD (killing two birds with one stone. Make a backup - test a HD), and after I was done I wasn't paying attention and the system rebooted into W2K before I could remove the clone.

After it finished booting, I shut it down, and something flashed about 'saving new setting', but I didn't think anything of it.

Pulled both drives, and made the clone Primary Master. Booted fine. Worked fine.
Shut down and put the first drive back in, but now it keep saying there is a pagefile problem, and is stuck in a loop no matter what I do (click OK, cancel, ESC, Con-alt-del). Pressing the front button will shut it down.

BUT... if I put the clone back in (secondary slave in this case), it boots, and everything is fine.

Is there a fairly simple way to fix this (next time)?

Every thing I tried just seemed to make it worse, Event Logs show errors all over, and parts of Control Panel and OE are FUBARed, and I am down to doing a dirty install to try and fix it.
Right now I am running the clone as the Primary Master (with the first drive removed), and it's all good.

I know I can probably just clone it back, but then I wouldn't learn anything about how W2K thinks.

I miss my W98se.   : /
