try regedt32 for changing registry permissions

Browse All TopicsThe installer for a new HP printer/scanner fails and asks for permission to access the registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\
An FAQ on their support site suggests right-clicking on 'Enum' and selecting 'Permissions', but that item does not appear in the pop-up. A further suggestion is to remove previous hardware drivers. That cannot be done because the Add/Remove Hardware Wizard says:
'You do not have sufficient security privileges to install or uninstall devices on this computer. Please contact your site administrator, or log off and on again as an administrator and try again.'
This is a home computer and I am the administrator. I guess that I need to modify something in the Security Settings, but I have not touched this before. Is that right, and if so, what settings?

coolsport00,
There is no 'Run As' when right-clicking on Add/Remove Hardware. As I said I am the administrator. I also tried two other user names, each members of the Administrators group.
Dauhee,
I was using regedit. Regedt32 worked and allowed me to follow the instructions and finish the printer installation. Thank you. However I still cannot use 'Add/Remove Hardware'
if you go to the following do you see your account:
administrative tools\device manager\local users and groups\groups\administrato
If not can you try adding?
You could also check local group policy settings for something to do with installations:
http://support.microsoft.c
There are registry keys that can be tweaked to enable/disable certain functionality in windows - do you have any tweak apps installed by any chance?
As I mentioned above, all three user names that I tried are members of the Administrators group.
I thought that it might be a setting in the Local Policies, but I haven't changed them from defaults. I didn't even know how to find the list a couple of days ago, so I would expect everything to be at the default settings. There are a lot of them. Is there a simple way of putting them all to the default values, do you know?

You received that "privilege" msg because you don't have admin permissions. You can right-click on the Add/Remove applet in the control panel and select "Run as". type in the name & pwd of an admin acct on the computer and you can run the Add/Remove pgm.
Regards.
