Windows 2000, services.exe crash with error 128 and restart computer. How to solve?

I have windows 2000 which until now always ask for restart.

The message is that services.exe is terminated unexpectedly with error code 128.

The timing is arbitrary, sometime the computer can be used up to several hours without restarting, and sometime almost every 15 minutes it restarts.

I would actually do a few things first........Install and update Super Anti Spyware and reboot to Safe Mode. Then do a full scan, and see what it finds. Or, if you prefer, scan with MalwareBytes....

Terminate memory threats - checked
Ignore non executable files - unchecked
Scan only known file types - unchecked

Under each tab, hit the Scan button, and see if you get any RED files/services/processes/drivers in the list, or just look for the summary, for any hidden files/services/processes/drivers in the lower left hand corner.....

In the registry under the following key.....

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Image File Execution Options

Look for a subkey named Explorer.exe. If it exists, kill it......

Also, check to see what the size of services.exe is, and make sure it is signed by MS. Can easily extract another copy from your CD, or see if there is a replacement in C:\WINNT\System32\DLLCache

I have tried that. Anti Virus said the system is clean. Malware/spyware scanners all said it is clean, but the system still restarting.

Solutions from Microsoft also not relevant to this case, even though the error code is the same. I think this is a generic error code for any case they can not explain :(

Any other ideas?

Corrupted file perhaps?

If you arent on SP4, upgrade to it. If you are, try reinstalling it....
