Question

Windows 2000 Pro - SP4 - no task manager!

Asked by: whftherb

Been working with a Win2000 Pro system, an HP Vectra, with 512mB RAM, 40 gB HDD, about half full.  It uses Symantec Endpoint V11.0 as it's anti-malware suite.  We got an infection with Adware.GAIN which Endpoint caught but could not delete on it's own.  We took manual control and deleted it, rescanned and it came up clean.  However....

We've lost the task manager!  Ctl-Alt-Del snaps up a DOS box which disappears so quick you can't read it.  And, no task manager.  Symantec says they can'thelp with this - this is our problem to fix.  Start > Run > Taskman.exe {Enter}.  No error (like file not found) but no task manager either.

I temporarily disabled EndPoint and used MBAM with the latest definitions to purge it.  It scans clean.  So, I'm not sure what to do next - this is the first time I've ever seen this kind of behavior.  Looking for some clues.

Could be that nasties are still lurking there causing this... Try and enabling  task manager or downloading zip utilitites to temporary enable task manager, and run other scans.
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/utils/xp_taskmgrenab.htm

And then run Combofix and show us the log.
Please download ComboFix by sUBs:
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe
(If it doesn't run re-download but rename before saving to your desktop)

You must download it to and run it from your Desktop
Now STOP all your monitoring programs (Antivirus/Antispyware, Guards and Shields) as they could easily interfere with ComboFix.
Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a log. Please save that log and attach it in your next reply by pasting it in the "Code Snippet" or "Attach File" window.
Re-enable all the programs that were disabled during the running of ComboFix..

Note:
Do not mouse-click combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

If needed, here's the Combofix tutorial which includes the installation of the Recovery Console:

would SFC /scannow with the windows CD replace these missing files?

SFC - I hope Win2000 has that.  I'm not sure - I've never run it on Win2000.  I also realize one mistake I made.  It's not "taskman.exe" it's "taskmgr.exe" at least on XP it is.  I like the Doug Knox approach too.  I'll be back in day or so with some more results.  Thanks to you both!

TaskManager is  TaskMgr.exe now, not TaskMan.exe.
Did you try a  Ctrl-Shift-Esc to bring up TaskManager?

by: whftherbPosted on 2009-09-30 at 07:02:16ID: 25458919

It's been a while good people.  Sorry to take so long.
Should I try this ComboFix procedure?  Or would it be safer to try SFC first?  I am leery of KO-ing network access (using ComboFix) as this W2K system is a little "sensitive" and I'm afraid it won't come back.  We really need this particular machine to be running.  I'd just like to put TaskMgr back the way it was.

by: QlemoPosted on 2009-09-30 at 07:11:52ID: 25459018

SFC is "safe", and you can run it anytime if you like.
ComboFix KO risk is low, but existent. Under rare circumstances, you have to go back to the last savepoint (which you can't with 2000, it's a XP+ feature :-)).

So try SFC first, it might help.

OK, I think I see something else significant here.  When I tried running SFC out of the RUN box, DOS box appears then disappears - same behavior as when I call up TaskMgr (Ctl-Alt-Del)   I am able to get to a DOS box with run > cmd and was able to launch and execute SFC /scannow from there.  Inserted orig W2K install media.  Ran through and provided no errors or warnings.

So, no "pure" DOS calls out of the RUN box work but I do have the cmd prompt.  So the malady is affecting more than I originally thought.  I tried run>service.msc - that works.  So, I went to the run box and browsed for a few more basic things like help.exe - this puts up a DOS box of the help list and then closes.  I navigated (out of the run - browse feature to my CCleaner program.  That works.  Navigating to notepad.exe works.  But navigating to user.exe does not.  So, it's these "generic" (If that's the word) DOX-;ike utilities that somehwo get intercepted.

I think the secret here is to be able to adjust this thing so that the DOS box does NOT close.  But that's a purely uneducated guess.  Anyone agree or diagree?

It's quite normal that sfc in RUN will run, and the window will close as soon as the program is run.
user.exe is a 16bit Windows program. What do you mean with "navigating does not"?

To run a "DOS" program and see the result, you will always have to open a command window for starting the commands.

OK, I can see I've caused the confusion - several typos as I was going too fast.  Let me try to elaborate:

Start > Run > SFC - does not work (whereas it does work on another system - XP Pro but similar to W2K)
Start > Run > cmd > SFC does work      And the result is SFC finds nothing to replace and gracefully closes to the DOS box it started from.

Start > Run > Help - does not work (and maybe it's not supposed to?)
Start > Run  > cmd > Help does work

Start > Run > services.msc works
Start > Run > Browse (to CCleaner shortcut on desktop) - works

Ctl-Alt-Del > Logon Panel > Taskmanger - does not work - as evidenced by the fact that no icon is seen in the systray and no taskmgr panel is showing.
Start > Run > cmd > taskmgr also does not work.  But I copied taskmgr.exe to taskmgrs.exe to create a second copy.  Start > run > taskmgrs.exe works as does Start > Run > cmd > taskmgrs.exe.  Again, evidenced by the fact that there is an icon in the systray and that the typical taskmgr panel is displaying.

So, I hope this does clarify the issue.  Willing to expound more if needed.  Maybe I'm barking up the wrong tree

You should continue with ComboFix, definitely and ASAP!

by: debuggerauPosted on 2009-10-05 at 21:36:28ID: 25501927

yes users.exe is not an application you can access..

Try typing in notepad from the run box and press ok, that should be definitive..

Let me get this straight: so your saying that if you run taskmgr2.exe from a cmd box, its ok, but if you try running the original filename, no go..

Just wondering if it is the path that is an issue,
please get that cmd box and type 'set' (without the ears) then Enter, which should show all environment variables, then post for comment..

by: whftherbPosted on 2009-10-11 at 07:29:28ID: 25546020

OK, I can check the "path" statement in the environment variables.  But I'm not sure that's the answer.  From the Run Box, a call to Notepad.exe works fine.  I think the path statement is set properly but I can make sure on my next visit.

Where you said:  "Let me get this straight: so your saying that if you run taskmgr2.exe from a cmd box, its ok, but if you try running the original filename, no go.."   This is correct.  A call to the orig taskmgr.exe fails but a call to it's copy works.

yes, sounds like a rootkit of some sort..

Wonder if it does this in safe mode too..

by: whftherbPosted on 2009-11-05 at 14:27:23ID: 25754790

Yes, this does this in Safe Mode too!  Have a copy of Rootkit Revealer on hand now so I will test with that next week.  What a pain!

by: debuggerauPosted on 2009-11-05 at 14:33:22ID: 25754835

those rootkit detectors have never picked anything up for me.. Did you try Combofix?

by: QlemoPosted on 2009-11-06 at 05:56:35ID: 25759077

ComboFix and MalwareBytes Anti-Malware (http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php) are the recommended tools for such purposes here on EE.

by: whftherbPosted on 2009-11-09 at 04:44:42ID: 25775348

ComboFix - I haven't tried it.  MBAM shows the system is clean.  I think it may be "clean" of mailware now, but whatever was loaded on here before cleaning has left its mark.  Agree?

I can't get to this until Wed (2 days from now) so I'll keep trying.

Long time update:  I didn't realize this was still open.  Shame on me!

I found a reg fix file that "re-invigorates" Task Mgr.

Sorry for the delay.
