Question

The browser has received a server announcement indicating that the computer %computername% is a master browser, but this computer is not a master browser.

Asked by: newgentechnologies

A domain computer on a novell based domain is getting the following windows warning every 10 seconds:

The browser has received a server announcement indicating that the computer LOFT1 is a master browser, but this computer is not a master browser.

This warning has been occurring every 10 seconds or so since the following error stopped coming up on the 28th of September:

DCOM was unable to communicate with the computer MAIN using any of the configured protocols.

Any idea why this might be happening? There is no problems with the computer beyond that it can't always login to their novell domain, and it only works after multiple reboots of the computer, and the computer is quite slow to load.

There isn't such a thing as a novell domain. Windows clients which connect only to a Novell Netware or OES server should be configured as workgroup computers, and they don't use the workgroup to communicate with the server.

What does the MAIN computer do? Which computer is LOFT1? Which version of Netware / OES /SLES are you running?

If you also have a Windows domain you should configure your workstations to not be a master browser:

LOFT1 is the computer the user is using. I am currently unsure which computer MAIN is. There is no Windows domain, simply Novell Netware 6.5

Can you confirm that your workstations are not configured to be in a domain, and that you have configured them to not be master browser as per the previous technet link?

I'll be able to take a look in the morning when the user is not using the computer, thank you for the link :)

The computer is not on a domain, it is on a workgroup. In the registry, the entry for "MaintainServerList" is set to Auto, I have since turned it to Off.

Is it simply now just a waiting game?

I have taken a look on the PC, and the event viewer is no longer showing the previous constant error of:

"The browser has received a server announcement indicating that the computer LOFT1 is a master browser, but this computer is not a master browser. "

Is there anything else I should check, refresh, etc, to see if it might continue happening or not?

Not that i know of. Computer browser traffic will always be on your network, but as long as it doesn't generate errors i guess all is fine...
