Question

Windows Update Agent problem

Asked by: Gary4

Hi,

When running this command:

windowsupdateagent30-x86.exe /wuforce

I get the error message:

Install failed with the following error number:
0x8024d007

I have tried a few remedies but to no avail.

I am out of ideas and willing to start over troubleshooting with a fresh pair of eyes.

The Windows update site errors saying:

Register or reinstall the files for me now (Recommended)

When I press continue it says:
Downloading the latest updating software and then says:
The website has encountered a problem and cannot display the page you are trying to view.

Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer scans but reports:

Windows Update Agent not found, or the computer is not running Windows 2000 SP3 or later.

However, when I tried installing WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe it said: Install is not needed since Windows Update Agent is already installed.

When I used the "force" switch is gave the above error number which leads me to believe it's only partially installed. i.e. installed enough so that the setup won't run but not complete enough to allow the security analyzer and windows update to use it.

OS: Windows 2000 Professional SP 4
This machine is a member of a domain but I don't think that is impacting the problem.
I am the domain administrator so I have god privileges.

Try using this app to repair Windows Update:
http://wiki.lunarsoft.net/wiki/Dial-a-fix#Mirrors.2Fdownload_locations.2C_and_articles
And then reinstall.

Hi cantoris,

I'll bet you were wondering what happened to me.

Ok, I get Dial-a-fix.  I've been folling the directions.  I checkd the disk and it was OK.  I ran 6 iterations of MemTest and it was OK.  (I was a bit surprised at this since I suspected a memory problem based on occasional system instability.)

The I ran Dial-a-fix.  I checked only WU/WUAU.  I got the following error messages and log file.

It looks like a problem with XML 3.  Should I try uninstalling it and reinstalling?

I'm not sure why It's saying Access Denied since I'm logged on as a domain administrator, unleess it's returning that as a general error.

It's certainly worth trying a reinstall of MSXML3 since it shows up in that log.
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?displaylang=en&FamilyID=28494391-052b-42ff-9674-f752bdca9582   (http://tinyurl.com/qcelf)

Once done, try manually reregistering wuapi.dll

If no good, try    sfc /scannow  (it may ask for your Windows CD)

If no good, stop the Automatic Updates service (if running); remove (or rename) the c:\winnt\Software Distribution  folder; restart the service; and then go back to http://update.microsoft.com

Good luck!

Hi,

Here's what happened.

I first tried reinstalling the MSXML3 that I already had downloaded.  It run but when I reran dial-a-fix it still got the errors.  So I tried doing the suggestion for the other erros and reset the permissions.  Then reran dial-a-fix.  This time the other errors were gone but the first error remained.  So, on a  whim, rereran dial-a-fix again and this time the first error was gone.

So, apparently the the XML3 was filing to register dur to a permisons eror on a depent something.  And the installation wasn't detecting this registration problme.

As I recall this whole thing started with a failed windows update patch installation. Probably related to this permissions problem.

Then I noticed that your link was for an update MSXML3 so I downloaded and installed that, just to be sure everything was up-to-date.

Wow, what a long trail.  And Microsoft wouldn't help me with the windows update problem.  They said because this machine was part of a domain.  As we can see it was not a domain issue.

Thanks a bunch for the help.  That dial-a-fix tip did the trick.

I'd buy you a beer if a could.

I'll say it was complete and accurate because this problem had multiple aspects and even the instructions I didn't follow could apply in other situations.

I dial-a-fix page also had good instructions and covered many bases to make sure the underlying hardware was in good working order.
