Question

NSLookup works, but can't ping (within my lan!)

Asked by: Avenir_IT

I just setup a new Linksys VPN router (RV082) with one of my clients. This is the fourth that I've setup, and even though this is a very simple network, I am having TONS of problems.
The users are unable to ping or connect to each other's computers. NSLookup was also not working, but I later fixed as I discovered that the reverse lookup zones had never been setup! Anyway, I can nslookup all the computers here, I can view them all in network places, however am unable to ping or connect to any of them with the exception of the server. (I can ping the server by ip or name, however the server cannot ping the workstations).

Please help!!

Thanks!

Hello,

Could there be a firewall application on the client computers which would be blocking ICMP (ping) packets? Windows 2000 does not have a built-in firewall which would block this type of communication.

Check the usual suspects; make sure the machines are in the same WORKGROUP, make sure they are all using the same DNS server.

You did not mention if the server was a DC, so I am not sure if you are using the DNS service on the server, or just forwarding out to your ISP's DNS server.

How are the clients getting their IP settings? Is the router acting as a DHCP server, and handing out the address, gateway, DNS server settings to the clients?  If you do have a Windows 2000 DC, with DNS, then it would be best to use the DHCP server on Windows with dynamic update.

Your router could be blocking traffic too.  might double check your LAN settings in your router.

have you ever used netdiag?

also make sure your DNS settings on the PC's are pointing to your server DNS and not the DNS of the router....
