The Aptiva Win98 upgrade page mentions getting the latest BIOS and video drivers, but says nothing about MWAVE drivers. I too was having problems with my MWAVE modem after upgrading to Win98. I found that you have to upgrade your modem drivers to build 20E version. You can do this after you have installed Win98.
Go to: http://www3.pc.ibm.com/sup
Get the correct driver for your machine model (I have a 2159-Sxx). Make sure you get the patch to fix 20E (v1.1 I believe). The 7 files to download will create 7 disks; 3 drivers; 3 midi samples, and the patch. Just follow directions.
I believe I have the sound corrected but the program Ring Central (answering machine and fax program) will not Initialize the modem when starting the program.
There is no dial tone etc.
Connecting to the internet works fine and I have midi sound etc.
When setting up Ring Central you can check the answering message (which I heard), but after finishing the installation you can not record a new message or play the same annoucement. The fax part of the program seems to work up to the point of sending the fax. So it seems the problem maybe that the modem is not reponding to the program.
I got not much to say except for avoid hardware 'pretenders' like Mwave if you can. I had an Mwave come with my system and got rid of it promptly. Better software soundcards (Like the Yamaha MIDI Plug) can be had for free, and there are tons of more fully featured, better supported modems out there for the same price as the Mwave (which, of course, only works on Windows since it's so ... uh ... advanced. Right. Thats it.)
Sorry to intrude, anyhow, back to some real solutions ... :)

No response from the modem? Have you run an echo test on it? Also have you tried the Windows 95 drivers?
