The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

win98 problems - i'm fairly experienced but finally stumped!

Asked by duncanh in Windows 98 Operating System

I have two problems, I have tried getting the answer everywhere else and had finally given up. Then I heard of you guys, cheers..
The first problem is that my Epson BJC10 Colour ink jet printer, only a couple of years old, which worked perfectly under win95 just won't print since I've "upgraded" to win98. The paper goes through but prints nothing. The company has not provided updated drivers, and the disks I used with win96 install but it doesn't print, and win98 doesn't include drivers specific, and using any generic or similar printer ones - tyhe same problem occurs. So I have a decent printer, only a couple of years old, just sitting there. ?!?!?
Second problem is this:
Myself and a mate of mine both have win98 and Internet Explorer - he has IE5, I still have IE4.01
At random times IE crashes with the following error message and on close it hides all my taskbar icons (not the minimised program screens but the icons in the left hand corner - internet connection etc) It is seriously irritating. It often happens when both Outlook Express and IE are open, or when Java scripts are running (often have problems with these as well)
, but not always - sometimes it just occurs randomly and at worst IE or outlook express terminates every time i try ro open it. It also sometimes tries to shut down Explorer and my desktop
Rebooting improves the problem for a while, and logging on again also to a lesser degree. The Microsoft fix for the error message, of deleting *.pwd password files, did not working - I'm stumped!!! As i said this happens to my friend with IE5 and happened on mine with IE4 and now IE4.01
the error message displayed is:
EXPLORER caused an invalid page fault in
module KERNEL32.DLL at 015f:bff9d709.

Stack dump:

(MS error resolution THAT DIDN'T WORK)
hen you attempt to start Internet Explorer or Outlook Express on a Windows 95 or Windows 98-based computer, your computer may stop responding (hang), and you may receive one of the following error messages:

   - Explorer caused an invalid page fault in module Kernel32.dll.

Commgr32 caused an invalid page fault in module Kernel32.dll.
Mprexe caused an invalid page fault in module Kernel32.dll.
Msgsrv32 caused an invalid page fault in module Kernel32.dll.

CAUSE
This behavior can occur if your password list (PWL) file is damaged.

RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue, use the following steps:

Click Start, point to Find, and then click "Files or folders."

In the Named box, type "*.pwl" (without the quotation marks), and then click Find Now.

In the list of found files, right-click each file, and then click Delete. Repeat step 3 until all of the .pwl files are deleted.

On the File menu, click Close.

Restart the computer. The password list files are re-created automatically when you log on to Windows.
