The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. No Sound

I have a Creative Labs AWE64 16-bit Audio card installed.  However, I am unable to hear any sound (No *.wav files, *.midi files, Music CD's, etc...).

I have gone to the Creative Labs Web site and installed the latest drivers to no avail.  Interesting is that under Control Panel-->Multimedia--->Devices-->Creative Sound Blaster 16 Plug and Play-->Properties It states "Status: Driver is enabled but inactive due to an unknown problem."

If I double-click on a *.wav file an error shows up stating "Cannot play back the audio stream; no audio hardware is available, or the hardware is not responding. (Error=80040256).

However, under Control Panel-->System-->Device Manager-->Sound,video and game controllers-->Creative AWE64 16-bit Audio (SB16 compatible)-->Properties-->General; it states "the device is working properly".  

I don't have any yellow exclamation points to indicate an IRQ problem.

I have uninstalled/reinstalled the software and, removed/reinstalled the sound card without luck.  Windows '98 finds the hardware and installs it, but still no sound.

My system is a Pentium III 500 Mhz, running Win '98 SE, 384 MB RAM, 20 GB Hard drive (9.0 GB free), Office 2000, IE 5.0 128 bit.

Please help.
