have determined that exchange of outlook loads with out errors when the user cancels at the login prompt. when user clicks OK at login prompt exchange or outlook will give the MPREXE error. tried only loading client for microsoft network but still got error. tried only loading client to netware network and got error. when loading both got error.

only got error when user clicked on OK at login prompt. when user clicked on cancel exchange or outlook would load and say network not found but no error.

Since you have Office97, why don't you use Outlook97 instead of the old Exchange client.  Maybe it was not included for this reason.

exchange or outlook97 both produce the error. the reason for using exchange the office has 18 computers that have exchange installed and they want a single email messaging interface

JTT, the problem is coming from one of four areas. (1) When you setup Windows 98 on this machine, you did not setup the mail service correctly, (2) the server logon settings are incorrect, (3) the MPREXE file is damaged or (4) the password list for that machine is damaged.

A. Make certain that if you are on an NT network, then use NT protocols, not netware etc. Make sure your bindings are set up correctly and the you are using the client for microsoft networks.

B. Make sure that the logon information matches that of the server and the user permisssions. Insure that the mailbox address is being correctly called and that the correct username and password is being used.

C. Use the system file checker to extract a new MPREXE.EXE file from the Windows 98 CD. Click Start, Run and type in SFC and click OK. Now extract the file and save it to the local hard drive.

D. As for the last part, try this.

Outlook stores mail server passwords in the Windows password list file.
When Outlook checks for new mail, it must reference this password list
file. The name of the password list file is generated from the name used as
the Windows Logon ID, for example <Username>.pwl.

To rebuild the password list file, follow these steps:

1. On the Windows taskbar, click Start, point to Find, and then click Files
   Or Folders.

2. In the Named box, type "*.pwl" (without quotation marks) and click Find
   Now.

3. Right-click the file titled <username>.pwl, and click Rename on the
   shortcut menu.

4. Rename the file to <username>.old, and then press ENTER.

NOTE: If you are using a personal certificate, you should export it
before renaming your .pwl file. If you do not do so, it may be
unavailable when you send e-mail. For more information, see the
following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

Q190296 Unable to Use Personal Certificates in Outlook Express

5. Restart Windows.

When prompted for a name and password, you must type a name. This name will
be your Logon ID and will also be used as a name for your new password list
file. Entering a password is optional. Leaving the password blank will
create what is called a null password. If you use the null password,
Windows will not prompt you for a password again.

The first time you run a program that stores a password in the password
list file, you will be prompted for a password. If you tell the program to
remember the password, it will be stored in the newly
created password list file.

The problem isn't with the clients at all... You either have a virus scanner running and it needs to be reloaded or the most likely thing is... Office 97 shipped with the old browser which causes problems with the win98 shell, reinstall the IE4 and DX 5 or 6.  This should take care of your problems and yes Exchange should work as the core and Outlook 97 are essentially the same things.

reloading exchange fixed the problem. microsoft fax was installed and was the cause of the problem. after reloading exchange from the tools directory on the win98 cd the problem was fixed.

This question was awarded, but never cleared due to the JSP-500 errors of that time.  It was "stuck" against userID -1 versus the intended expert whom you awarded.  This corrects the problem and the expert will now receive these points; points verified.
