Originally used Netscape 4.51 and all was fine.
Then, loaded "@Home 2.0", a customized Browser(from COX, my cable internet service provider) and an assortment plug-ins based around Internet Explorer 5.0 & Outlook Express 5.0.
Still worked fine, but I didn't like it, so decided to un-install.
After un-installing all "@Home 2.0" items(about 5 different items in all) from my "Add/Remove Programs" dialogue, I discovered that I had video problems & sound problems. Mainly, could only get 16 colors & No sound. I was able to solve my video problems by loading the most recent version of video drivers available for my video card.
Video is now back to normal. Still no sound. Under Device Manager, found my usual "Sound, video and game controller" devices.
However, when I clicked on the properties of each, there was no settings tab for my "Creative Labs Sound Blaster PCI128" & my "Sound Blaster PCI128 Legacy Device". Resources on all devices are recognizing the proper IRQs and there are "No conflicts" and no exclamation points. When the PC boots up, "Creative Labs Sound Blaster PCI128" is recognized on IRQ9(same as in Device Manager.
Just for good measure, I attempted to reload the "Creative Labs Sound Blaster PCI128" latest drivers. Still no help.
Also, when I had attempted to check Control Panel, clicking on Multimedia caused a "RUNDLL32 caused an invalid page fault in
module KERNEL32.DLL" error. I tried to un-install and re-install "Multimedia" support in "Add/Remove Programs" and when I was re-installing, I got the error: "Unable to load Mmsys.cpl". The re-install completed despite the error, but "Multimedia" was no longer an available icon in Control Panel. Neither was the "Sound" icon.
Both gone. I attempted to restore "Mmsys.cpl" from Win98 CD and succeeded, but no change. Still no sound. Even tried to use the Win98 System Information "System File Checker" option and restored any & all files that could have been corrupted or lost since I uninstalled the "@Home 2.0" software. No help.
I am usually pretty well familiar with solving conflicts in hardware & software in Win95 & Win98, but this has me stumped.
Does anyone have any ideas?
