Question

File Extensions quirk !

Asked by: danM

My Norton Utilities "Win Doctor" comes up with three "file extensions -- (which)
"refer to an invalid program identifier" --
the extensions are ".klmx"  ".f100" and
".p950".   I then use N.U. to remove them from the registry.

But they, and this problem, keep coming back -- ie when I next check N.U., there again are the same 3 "invalid" extensions.

I'd like to remove them permanently - how ?

Dan.

danM: Open "start" , "settings" , "Folder options" , "file type" Then find those file extentions from the list and remove them.
Good luck my friend....
Navid..

by: danMPosted on 2000-08-29 at 10:20:14ID: 4117928

To Navid

No good -- none of the three extensions is in the area mentioned, alas.

by: NavidPosted on 2000-08-29 at 20:01:01ID: 4123358

If these file extenstions are not registered on the list, then they don't exist on your windows registry.
What do you mean by "But they, and this problem, keep coming back" ?
Do you mean that every time you run windoctor, it indicates that 3 invalid file extensions can be found on your registry? Or can you find files with these extensions in your hard drive which refer to an invalid program?

My advice is get rid of Norotn's! As you see I am not a big supporter of this product! otherwise then that I would make sure you have a goood anti-virus program running and that it is up to date! Dave
P.S. You might want to check under your win.ini under load= and run= to make make sure you don't have something running here.
The only other advise is to run regedit from the start\run command and search these culprits out and delete these keys. Don't use Nortons do it manually!~

emery800,
What do you have against Norton. This is not the first comment I have seen you make that was negative towards Norton. They make a great product that hogs all of your memory and takes most of your available system resources to do the same things that you yourself could do. If they took any more memory, they would have to call it Windows, but that would be a copyright infrindgement, wouldn't it.

by: NavidPosted on 2000-08-29 at 21:14:51ID: 4123838

Well I agree with Dave.Although Norton company is a good software production, Norton win doctor and system doctor or ... are no good. Most of the time, they refer to problems that don't exist. Sometimes they fix problems which are not really problems but will create problems!!
Norton utili. and Norton optimiser is good for newbies who can not fix the problems manually. But unfortunatly most of the time, they can't indicate the right/real problems.

by: emery800Posted on 2000-08-29 at 21:16:47ID: 4123854

I do not mean to be negative against norton products! I can only base my comments on my use of their products. They are great but very powerfull! I have lost a lot of harddrives to their utilities, I still use their winfaxpro (its great), however, most users do not know how strong this product is and they should be careful using it. I never have said it is a bad product, only that it is a memory hog and dangerours! Sorry for the spelling but a bad night! Ha Ha! Its great but I have learned my lesson and all I can say is be careful of it!!!!! :>) Dave

emery800,
I was just kiding around. I agree with you one hundred percent. They do make some good products and others just take up memory. I recently downloaded the Norton Personal Firewall for my system due to the fact that I was hacked over the weekend and spent 2 hours getting everything back to normal. Anyway, we're not here to talk about Norton, just wanted to clarify my statement.

PS emery800, do you have any suggestions for personal firewall software?

by: emery800Posted on 2000-08-29 at 21:28:53ID: 4123889

Depends on your application! Winproxy has worked good for small busnesses. Can't spell tonight! Ha Ha!

by: jsaxon2Posted on 2000-08-29 at 21:33:19ID: 4123897

Just looking for a personal Firewall. I've been using Norton for a couple of days now and it appears to be very good and extreamly flexible. Just wondering about your preferences if any? I'm currently using VicomSoft Surfdoubler to share my cable connection due to the fact that it was late and I couldn't buy a second NIC at 12:30 AM.

by: emery800Posted on 2000-08-29 at 21:46:50ID: 4123959

Sorry! I haven't pursued this area! I leave it to the network administrators and I just live with what they provide. There are are so many things growing so fast I can't keeep up with it all. That would be a great question at this site! You would get I am sure a lot of good thoughts. Everything is forcing us to specialize and I am not trying to surcumb but it is becoming more difficult each day! :>)

just leave that error ,I think it won't cause any problem for u in the future.

but if still u want to do so , run regedit and open \HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\ all extension are defined there ,find those ext and remove them .

An interseting discussion.guys ---

To navid --

What I mean by "coming back" is that after I get Norton Utilities to "repair" the situation (presumably by removing from where-ever the 3 spurious extensions), then sometime later, when I run NU again, the same message as detailed in the original question is again there.

So something in my system must be re-generating the three "extensions" somewhere !

dan

by: NavidPosted on 2000-08-30 at 11:11:59ID: 4130980

danM: dear DanM... If you are not facing any trubles, then let Norton util. indicate the problem. As we said before, Norton can have wrong. Sometimes it faces problems which are not real.
Any system files which look wrong will make it to indicate wrong diagnoses.
I wish you luck in the future. If you noticed any problems or anything else, let us know and we will help you.
If these file extentions do not exist on windows registry, they do not exit. (folder options , filetype as I asked you before to check)
Take my advice and do not take Noton util. as your reference.
Although Norton is an excellent soft ware, do not trust its diagnoses 100%. lol
Wish you all luck pal DanM... thanks
Navid.........

IMHO, I would uninstall Norton's and join the real world. This is not to you but to the Norton products. He never did get along with Bill Gates! :>)

by: JohnDeckerPosted on 2000-08-30 at 16:11:18ID: 4135156

Is Norton simply objecting to the four character extension? That was my first thought, but surely they can't be the only four character extensions on the system - I have 1769 on mine!

by: emery800Posted on 2000-08-30 at 16:16:55ID: 4135212

If you look at the file extensions they are kind of wierd! Either Norton has not included them as acceptable in his software or the latest update has not been done to this Norton product to add them if Norton indeed has added them! It is trying to inform the user that a virus may be present. IMHO. Dave

by: NavidPosted on 2000-08-30 at 19:05:53ID: 4136584

I can think of another possibility too besides what "Dave" said.
Norton has its own system and file registry.(like Dave said, Bill gates and Norton never get along! and I don't get along with either of them! hehe) Sometimes when you uninstall a software, Norton doesn't remove the entry from its own registry.(even if the software is 100% uninstalled and all files cleaned). That is a bug that I have found before in Norton. The information that Norton have now is that you have uninstalled a program. It is possible that file entries haven't been cleaned from Norton so it assumes that "a program has been removed and generated files by that program are now invalid".
But I understand that you are worried that something might be wrong since "Windows Doctor" has found a disease in your computer!! lol
But anything to be worried about? No I don't think so.. Even doctors can have wrong. I can tell you that(speaking by own experience)... hehe

by: danMPosted on 2000-08-31 at 07:43:46ID: 4143395

Iaccept the various comments above - but being a perfectionist I don't like seeing anything about which I don't have a valid explanation.
I have looked at HKEY/CLASSES/ROOT
but do not find any of the three mystery extensions there !
They are thus not in residence at present, but from past experience the N.U. message about the mystery three will be back in a few days.  The trick will be to find what in thise days is the cause !

Dan.

by: NavidPosted on 2000-08-31 at 08:34:33ID: 4144192

danM: Open "start" , "findfile" and type *.klmx or *.f100 or *.p950 on file find. See if you find any files with these strange extentions on your hard disk.

by: danMPosted on 2000-08-31 at 09:19:43ID: 4145034

Not a trace of any of the three via
start/find/files.

But on past history they will be back

I'll leave this question open for a few more days, and keep checking as advised.

dan.

by: danMPosted on 2000-09-01 at 02:27:08ID: 4154181

I ran NU "WinDoctor" this morning and, sure enough, the 3 mystery file extensions were back, again flagged as "invalid file extensions"

A check in HKEY/CLASSES/ROOT showed all three present, so I deleted them from
H/C/R.   So "something" on my system is putting them back every time either NU, or I manually, removes them.

I'll live with this if there are no solutions soon.  Is there no way to use my system to tell me what puts these 3 extensions in the registry ?????

Dan.

by: NavidPosted on 2000-09-01 at 03:50:55ID: 4154764

Dan: It could be Norton util. (win doctor) which resister the extentions when you run it. you need to clean Norton registry too in that case.
Good idea to leave the question open. You might find new answers.
Good luck my friend.......
Navid....

by: danMPosted on 2000-09-01 at 04:49:25ID: 4155307

Then how do I clean the Norton Registry - I did not know that Norton had any sort of registry -- where is it to be found please ?

Dan.

by: nailerPosted on 2000-10-06 at 21:33:54ID: 4618796

danM,
I too run Norton Utilities and I run into the same thing.  I have since set mine to ignore the problem because I too couldn't figure out how to rid myself of those extensions.  Sorry I couldn't help but at least you now know your not the only one. :-)
                Nailer

by: danMPosted on 2000-10-18 at 14:46:10ID: 4798821

How do you set NU to "ignore" our problem please ?

by: nailerPosted on 2000-10-18 at 14:55:57ID: 4798960

When it is finished finding problems, on the lower half of the screen(where the individual problems are) right click and choose "ignore" its as easy as that.

I run N.U. to remove invalid active x entries, but everytime i open a particular program (AOL 7.0, in my case) it puts those invalid active X's right back on.... Until i remove them again with N.U.  Which i do regularly, now, because it seems to make a difference in how well my system operates.  But i am not tech wise, am novice, and do not know of a better solution.

by: itspcbPosted on 2004-05-15 at 16:06:39ID: 11079178

Dan M:Ghena2, have you made any progress with your problem?
I too have lived with these effects for a long time , they seem to do no harm, but niggle me!. The extensions always appear after a restart in my case. (Ghena2, I don't have AOL)
I suppose we could do a selective start with msconfig and see if that sheds  a light.
A google search on klmx produces a german note , anyone translate for us?

Thanks

I guess I would ask are they still having the problem as it was submitted back in 2000? I will bet if/once they removed Nortons they didn't have a problem! :>) Dave

Ghena2's post was recent. No doubt not looking for them won't find them! Are you suggesting that Norton generates the extensions?
