The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Windows98 freezes during install. Can't install at all

Asked by totsubo in Windows 98 Operating System

Sorry to make this question so long but I figure I should give you all the information I have in order to get the best possible answer. Read at the bottom if you want my current state of affairs and problem

I decided to build my own system so I bought all the parts and put them together. Her'e a list of what I have:

Abit BE6-II v1.2 motherboard
Celeron 566, socket adapter and HSF
256 Mb RAM (1 DIMM)
Matrox G400 video card
LAN card
Creative SB sound card
20 Gb Fujistsu 7200 RPM HD
Creative 10x/40x DVD player
Plextor 12/12/32A CDR-RW

Ok ... after much trouble I got all the parts in the right place. Then after a few false starts I got the machine to boot up. Then I tried installing windows98.

Low and behold it worked! Then I tired getting smart and overclocked my CPU to 100 Hz FSB and 1.65V giving me an 850 MHz CPU.

This is when I started having problems. The video wasn't working and I kept getting booted up in safe mode. So I removed the video drivers, re-installed some newer ones and booted up at 566 MHz. Everything went fine.

Went back to 850 MHz.

Then I wanted to test out my new machine so I installed a game: Ultima IX. Well ... the install crashed. So I again rebooted at 566 and re-installed thegame. No problem. Even played it at 566 for a few minutes.

So back to 850 MHz. Computer boots up fine, game crashes after starting. Keep trying ... game keeps crashing ....

Finally the computer boots up and all I get is a background screen and nothing else. If I press CTRL-ALT-DEL I get the task manager but no tasks are listed. If I press shutdown, after a while I get "this task is not responding". I couldn't get win98 booted at all afetr 5 tries.

** Problem **

I am re-installing win98 at 566 MHz. I copied the who;e CD to my C: drive and install from there. The installation goes fine until it starts detecting PnP devices. After a while it freezes. If I restart the computer everything seems fine except that I get the win98 installation background (blue screen), my mouse works but the installation doesn't pick up where it left off from!

I've tried to re-install win98 four times and always the same problem. What can I do!?
