It all started about 2 months ago. I was loading in a program and entered the wrong ser #. The computer locked up and I decided to uninstall the half loaded program. I've been having problems ever since.
This incident may or may not be the cause of my problems, but this is when they started.
First I'll tell you about my computer. I have a pentium 200 MHz, 64 mb edo ram, a 5 gb hard drive and a 13 G hard drive (d=7G, e=6G) Windows 98, HP cd writer, umax scanner, HP 722 printer, kodak digital camera.
Now my problems, After the incident, I started getting illegal operations more and more every day. Until one day, the computer wouldn't start up. So I formatted C and reinstalled windows 98.
During installation, I was getting illegal operations. After installation was complete, Windows was all messed up. It was saying HIMEM problems, Illegal operations, etc...
I formatted C again (I've formatted c about 100 times already) I removed my ram cards, dusted them off, swapped positions and reloaded windows again. That was the last HIMEM problem I saw, BUT
Still couldn't get through windows 98 installation without illegal operations.
Well, I disconnected C and loaded windows on D, that didn't change anything. I disconnected D & E and tried loading on C, same story. I tried second edition windows 98, still was having problems, BUT every time I formatted c and reloaded windows, I was getting less and less illegal operations. All I should have to do is reload it 100 more times and i'll be all set.
Then I tried loading it from my cd writer instead of my cd rom. That seemed to make a big difference. I could make it through the win 98 install without any illegal ops. Still was getting illegal ops during everyday operations.
Now, I get illegal operations, at random,I'll restart, then I'll see a window pop up that says windows registry has errors, restart to repair the registry. I don't fully understand the registry. Where is the registry stored? I'm assuming on C, right??
Now for the question, Why can't I reload windows succesfully, starting with a formatted c drive??
I have some good points waiting for the one who gets rid of my problems and gets my computer running smoothly again. I'm ready to use it as a boat anchor.
Thanks for your time and I hope you can help,
Karl
