PC cannot record sound

Running Win 98SE...I can get sound out of the speakers with microphone, but I cannot get the PC to record the sound comming through the microphone.  Im trying to make calls over the internet by means of a headset.  I can call and hear the other party, but the other party cant hear me.  I can hear my own voice.

The obvious, is the microphone plugged into the correct slot.

 Sounds like a gremlin popped up and set the microphone control panel on your PC to mute.If you're lucky there will be a little yellow icon on the taskbar at the botom of your screen that will call up the sound controls. You will find that the one marked Microphone has a box marked mute checked. Click the box to uncheck it and you'll be back in business quicker than you can say allegro.

If the icon isn't there click on Start/Settings/Control Panel and then look for the icon marked Multimedia. Click that and you'll find a box to "Show volume control on taskbar."

Click the check box there and then close the box. You now have the yellow speaker icon to click. Now follow the advice above con brio. Presto!

should probably check the hardware profile to see if the device is working properly and to see if your drivers ned updating

I think you should check to see if your sound card is full duplex or not. If it is not that would cause you to only be getting half response. To check that, go into your device manager and double click your sound card and check settings. A Sound Blaster 16 or comparable card will be full duplex.

The first thing is, check and make sure the mic is turned on. Go to thespeaker in the sys tray and double click, choose options, properties,click recording and click microphone, adjust the volume as you need. For some reason windows mutes the mic.

I fixed it.  The Microphone needed to be selected under record......by checking off select and unselecting everything else.  I got the mic to record.  I was still haveing trouble talking over the internet untill I figured out that my personal firewall was preventing the transmission.  All I need to do is turn off my firewall when Im making a phone call over the internet.  Thanks to all.
