What if you put the cdrom in the other CD reader/writer.
Some of the games remember from which drive they were installed and other just pick up the first CD drive and demand that the CD must be in that drive.

You will need to swap the drive letters over on the CDROM and CDRW and install C&C from the CDROM. Some games will not run from a recorder due to security built into the CD.

Also (a pain) the game only installs best from the first CD device (when its CDRW its a problem)

You can do this by swapping over the master and the slave (the master will normally take first pick of the available letters) or you can go into the device manager - to the CDs and properties and at the bottom of this box is a drive letter range you can select (I make both boxes the same, that no range at all just my choice of drive letter) You cant change them to any of the hard drive letters by the way.

Tiberian Sun is a cracking game by the way!!!

by: WiZaRdPosted on 2000-10-17 at 07:55:26ID: 4771509

Tonnybrandt & StormMajik have it !!

The game looks for the first drive letter assigned to a CD drive.
No need to do anything internal just reassign drive letters or run from the CDRW.

Good luck

Note: If you change the drive letters for your cd-rom you may have to make one a high letter while you change the other and then change the high letter to the right one after. Also assign the start and end drive letterwhile you are making the finally changes. Dave

I have that game installed and it runs fine on a CDRW, especially since that is the only CD drive that I have in my PC.  So that shouldn't be the problem.  It does look for the drive you installed it from to run so if it was put in the other CD drive than that would definately be a problem.  What operating system are you trying to run the game under?

by: StormMajikPosted on 2000-10-17 at 14:48:44ID: 4778579

True MeanKty: I tested it when I got home. ;-)

Not all games, not all CDRs - but some. However it was not a problem with my system.

With regard to C&C Tiberian Sun

The item I tested was which drive to install on - it will install on all, however my test showed that it would only install and RUN on the first CD in the list.

I had a saved web page from the Westwood web site about this problem and that was the answer. The link is not the same now however so I will just direct you to the main web page at the moment

www.westwood.com

I will try to find the link now

zippadee,

sorry the site has gone a little overboard with Flash etc.

Try the CD swap as I described - I am 99.9% certain this is it.

If you ever want game hint email me on dmf_force@hotmail.com ;-)

That the Dead Men Fighting Force C&C gaming clan by the way!

Yes I admit it, I'm a C&C addict!!!

More on Westwood...

I tried going through their support web page - it asks you questions but a bug pevents you completing it. It did ask one interesting question before it fouled up.

"Do you have a CD-Rom drive that is neither a Writer, nor a Plextor product?"

Answer: "Use a standard CDROM drive and try the installation again."

So maybe with some CDR/CDRWs and Plextor products there is indeed a problem. So that covers both parts of my comment.

Although in my case and MeanKty's this last point was not an issue.

Storm ;-)

Try to find your game CD using windows explorer.

If you found a folder called 'Crack', then copy file inside that folder and overwrite the one inside your hard disk. May be it's an executable file.

May be this can help you to solve your problem.

yongyih! Welcome to E-E! Its common courtesy to provide comments unless you know your answer is the only answer and is 300% correct and is what the questioner is looking for and will fix their problem. Please don’t take this personally, (others could let you know before I and not so diplomatically) I made the same mistake when I first arrived and someone was nice enough to point it out to me (It hurt my feelings, but I soon realized its teamwork that’s used here).
This accomplishes a couple of things:
First: it doesn't lock the question allowing more exposure to other experts allowing a faster fix (many problems require an interactive dialogue to troubleshoot them properly),
Secondly: it gives the questioner the option to make an award based on the best comment that helped the most in fixing their problem and it is also is common courtesy to other experts.
Please change your present answer to a comment. Again welcome and look forward to working with you in the future, a lot of teamwork is used at this forum, as you will see! :>) Dave

emery800 for politics !!

yongyih I too started by trying to answer everything until I was corrected in not quite as diplomatic a fashion.

zippadee I actually had a customer bring me this exact game with 2 HDD's & 2 CD drives. I'm fairly sure on the first comment but otherwise uninstall & reinstall on the E drive then run it from there. If you don't want to run it from the burner you'll need to reconfigure so that E is the standard drive.

I had so much fun fixing this one I forgot to charge the customer. Great game when you get it working !!

by: zippadeePosted on 2000-10-18 at 04:53:12ID: 4787661

Thanks!  You were right.  I reasigned my CD-RW to a letter that is higher than my CD-ROM and now the game can find and run the disk no problem from the CD-ROM.  Thanks again!
