Any one know of a quality program that records from. your line in (tape/record)
to mp3 ? i have Adaptecs spin doctor but i was looking for something that could record at a higher kps,khz .

You'd be better off recording your sounds to WAV files at whatever frequency and bitrate serves you best, then converting them to MP3 using one of the programs available for this purpose. This needs a lot of disk space, but because you're not having to do the MP3 compression in real time, you don't need to worry about how long it takes!

This is an open source MP3 encoder.
For best results, use a quality program designed for exactly this purpose; I've heard good stories about Audiotools: http://www.btinternet.com/
Then, you still need to get the resulting WAV files into MP3; in tests (like at http://www.r3mix.net ) the LAME encoder turns out to have the best quality sound by far (and it's free!).

This is however a DOS program, and you may want to use a Windows frontend:

PS Audiotools includes a plugin for 'Gogo'- Gogo is actually a sped-up version of LAME (but an older version of LAME). I wouldn't recommend using Gogo itself as the quality is really not as good as today's LAME, but perhaps the plugin accepts LAME as well.
For a mainstream tool that is used by most for everyday MP3 and also does what you want checkout Musicmatch at http://www.musicmatch.com
This won't record from tapes but it does have filters that can help.

I use MusicMatch, just choose under recorder, at the bottom you can choose the source you want to record from and at what quality, just choose "Line In".
It also converts several different formats as well aka...mp3 to wav...or back the other way. You can convert parts of, or a whole Music CD into mp3 also. There is free version, and if you pay for it, you can also use it to acurall make CD's.
