Cleaning up...

After a cold reboot and writing code for x hours, my computer becomes sluggish with crap like AOL-IM, IE and other useless stuff open. Symptoms like clicking on a back button on IE will cause a 3-5 second delay before anything executes, and this is similar with other programs, which will occasionally lock up. If I do a cold reboot again, everything is fine. I assume this is a common problem since this happens at home and at work. How do I fix it or go about cleaning crap up? Sounds like a memory problem. I know if you blow your computer up and start over then it's fine for a few weeks. Any suggestions? I'll split the points or award more for multiple suggestions / solutions based on the result.
