The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

WinME with no EMS memory support available

Asked by MrHobbes in Windows 98 Operating System

For some reason, every time I have installed WinMe I do not have EMS support available to me:

When I was running Win98 I added:
device=c:\windows\himem.sys
device=c:\windows\emm386.exe 2765
to my config.sys, but I am unable to do this successfully in WinMe. As soon as I make the changes and restart, Windows will just replace my changes with new blank config.sys. I have tried adding these lines back in through msconfig.exe, in DOS mode, and in safemode. no luck.

I need around 2700 free EMS to play an ancient DOS game I have (Master of Magic from Microprose). I have tried making a bootdisk, but WinMe does not get along with my Win98 bootdisks. This isn't really critical, but MoM was a great game and I'd like to fire it up again.

So I tried editting the WinMe boot disk, but after adding those lines and rebooting, I get an error similar to, "memory handler already installed" (refering to himem?). So I took himem out and tried again, then emm386 didn't work.

It doesn't matter if I can get EMS support IN WinMe, I just need to have EMS available to me while using my comp.

I'd be happy to post my comp specs if they are needed.
