Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. Win98 Standby problem

500 points to whoever can help get this problem solved by 1700 GMT. I will be back at approx. 1600 GMT to start looking.

The computer:

Gigabyte GA-5AX with AMD K62-400
Either Trident AGP or ATI PCI video card (all others removed)
64-128 assorted memory modules
Windows 98 SE


The problem:

When entering Standby, the computer blanks the video, beeps 3 times, then either reboots itself or locks to needing a hardware reset.

Solutions tried:

1. Tried all permutations of enabling and disabling power management in BIOS and Win98 (via Device Manager settings). Even under-clocked CPU and tried different "Throttling".
2. Updated BIOS to most recent posted at Gigabyte.
3. Removal of all other cards and drivers except video.
4. Tried different video card.
5. Eliminated video card driver (substituted Windows default VGA).
6. Revisited Windows Update, loading and unloading any potentially related patches.
7. Ran MS-pmtshoot.exe -- never reported anything (clean message screen at boot regardless of what happened).
8. Clean installs of Windows (various configurations) to wiped hard (un-installing/iinstalling APM separately a few times).
9. Swapped and tested memory modules (desperation had set in).
10. Contacted Gigabyte tech support - no help.
11. ditto.
12. ditto.
13. Swore at it continuously for 5 minutes.
14. Stuffed it in the closet.

The computer was burned-in and ran otherwise flawlessly for a month (never being put into Standby).

Submit any CONSTRUCTIVE ideas/processes (i.e. NOT "bad board" or "don't use standby" etc.)

I will be back to look at answers at 1600 GMT and hopefully award 500 points and maybe even 500 bonus points if the solution works the first time.
