The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

HELP : Mouse with mind of it's own

Asked by GeoffKell in Windows 98 Operating System

Tags: usb

I was asked to look at a neighbour's computer which was exhibiting a strange sort of problem.

I've had a look, done a full virus check (nothing found) and am still somewhat confused as to what's going on. It's not easy to explain but here goes :-

Upon starting Win 98 all works fine for a short while which can be anywhere from 30 seconds to 5 minutes then the screen appears to go haywire. The problem is linked to the mouse. Once the problem starts, when the mouse is moved there appears to me to be many mouse events being passed back to the O/S. A short mouse movement may instigate a drag and drop, perform a right click and move in completely the opposite direction for a very different amount. When the mouse is moved a lot imagine what it looks like (the screen appears to go haywire). There does not appear to be any consistency in the movement linked to the screen behaviour at any point in time. Keyboard control is not affected at all.

I only had a quick look tonight (No apparent IRQ conflicts) and have come away scratching my head and have formulated the following as my next step :-

1) Try Safe Mode to see if problem still exists.

2) Try a different PS/2 mouse with new drivers - this should highlight a mouse or driver problem

3) Try a serial or USB mouse with new drivers - this should highlight PS/2 port problem.

I'd appreciate any comments on my plan and any further ideas.

I didn't make a note of the H/W but I remember the following

1) 64MB Memory of which 8MB was shared with integrated graphics
2) on board sound

Your help is greatly appreciated, especially as there's a couple of bottles of wine in it for me when I get the problem sorted. You get the points I get the wine - sounds fair to me

TIA
Regards
GK
