1)Why Me, 98SE?
2)Would you consider a second hard-drive?
If so, there are 3 devices you could use:
1) removable hard-drive apparatus (expensive $40 - $120, plus removing hard-drives, well not something I would do)
2) Romtec makes a cool device.
3) There's another device off of Tom's Hardware, let's one turn a key to boot from second hard-drive.

chefPeter,
First, you need to make certain that you have at least over 2Gb partition other than from your OS of WinMe which is on C drive.
It is because WinXP Pro/home edition FAT32/NTFS both OS will use up 1.2 GB.
That means you need a D drive or E....etc.
If you have an upgrade version of WinXP Pro/home, put the WinXP cdrom in the cdrom drive while running WinMe.
Check compatibility first and see the report that will give you some information about your system for compatibility both hardware and software.
Then install WinXP.
Select a clean installation rather than upgrade to your existing WinMe.
Select drive D.
Proceed Installation.
It will start copying files, reboot itself and then start to ask you for formatting and partition in either FAT(FAT32) or NTFS.
After that, installation continues and reboot and at this stage is detecting your non-PnP and PnP hardwares.
Sometimes, you may be hang at this stage due to the driver of certain devices not found.
Just press Reset button and start again installation to pass through the previous failure.
It will proceed till finished.
After finished, inspect device manager.

(need to go and back 12hours later).
Hope to hear your good news while I'll be back. ;-)
