directory listing doesn't refresh

Sfc shows no changes other than setupx.dll which MS changed a while back to allow installs of a new gen of programs, I see it changed on all PC's I run WindowsUpdate on.

The list of startup programs hasnt changed in several months nor has the load order so I'll go this route later if I have to but it doesnt follow since I havent added anything new. I have about 10 items there other than systray and explorer and all but three are related to peripherals.

I run scanregw everyday and it always comes clean. I also backup up system.dat and 7 others every day in a batch file routine so I can revert to any day of the week. I am really interested in knowing however what change has occurred in the registry that has caused this effect since that is almost always where the problems come from. I used to see this problem often was back in W95a days but just did a fresh reinstall but I have to much going on this PC to consider that.

Any ideas on where in the registry from anyone before I do a revert is what I am looking for and I will turn off all startups once just to see if the problem goes away.

I have had that problem intermittant on a 98 box at work, and if I right click on the cd and choose eject it seems to work. But that is a test box (I install and remove a lot of programs on it)

I should also mention this problem doesnt occur all the time but almost, but to have my main PC where everything is working almost perfect and have this one stupid quirk just kills me.

You know, dropping everything out of startup might work but I still think there is some setting in the Registry that will allow it to work even if resources are say below 30%. Maybe some cache size setting I just dont know about. Microsoft support knowledge base has nothing.

Maybe F5 key on your keyboard isn't working. One way to check if it is the keyboard is to open Explorer itself and in the right hand pane right click on and empty area then choose "Refresh" and see what happens.

Maybe as a diagnostic method, try going to TOOLS in IE and delete cookies and history.

Speed up the Windows Refresh Rate
If every time you add a new folder, or you delete something from a window, and you have to hit F5 (Refresh) to see the results, here is how to make Windows refresh automatically:

Start the Registry Editor
Double-click on HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
Go to System > CurrentControlSet > Control > Update folder
Go to the right pane and right-click on UpdateMode and select Modify. Change the value from 01 to 00
Click on OK and exit the Registry Editor
Restart Windows 95 for the changes to take place.

Alternatively you can download this registry patch. Save it to your desktop, then just double-click to import the registry info in your registry.

How are your cd-rom drives set up? Secondary?  Do you have a RAID controller? Do you have CD autorun disabled?
