Question

Win98SE shutdown

Asked by: richardwilkins

This is a tired subject, but I am at wit's end.  Started with  Win98 (5-11-98) which would not shutdown.  Tried some of the fixes but no luck.  Upgraded to SE, applied the patch but no fix.  I tried everything including all those at
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q238096

I flashed the old BIOS with the latest, after copying the drive to another one, which I found to shutdown OK with a new m/b.  It's a PII 400 with an Abit BH6 m/b.  Have a brand new video card, too.  If you turn it off (4 second delay or no), it restarts without running scandisk.  I'm to the point of recommending a new m/b or just living with it.  Everything else works fine.
Anybody have any other suggestions?

Shutdown is one of the most common of all problems in every variety of Windows.  The best and most informative page I've encountered so far on the net concerning this problem, for Win95 thru WinXP is this:

There is also this page, which has many links to the Microsoft Knowledge Base about Shutdown and Restart Problems, for all varieties of Windows from 95 to XP:

It seems you have tried everything but don't overlook your sound drivers. make sure they are the correct version and are up to date. Sound also has caused shutdown problems in windows.

one test to let us know whether this is a software or real mode driver issue.  you may have done this already and perhaps i missed it in the comments above but....

try it from safe mode.  if the system shuts down properly from safe mode, one of the following is likely causing the problem.

1) a real mode driver not closing out correctly.  try removing and THEN installing new drivers for video, sound, etc.

2) a TSR running in real mode windows which is not closing down in a timely manner and stopping windoze from doing so.  in real mode, check cntrl+alt+del and kill all tasks except systray and explorer and then try the shut down.  if it works, you can remove the offender from microsoft configuration utility.  start|run|type "msconfig" and hit OK.  choose selective startup, and click on the "startup" tab on the right.  remove non-essential programs.  if you have questions about this let me know.

try these and report back.  these problems can be frustrating but a little troubleshooting usually identifies the cuplrit.

The fact that you can reboot without running scandisk is significant, that is, the last screen is failing to close.  The conflict is between the bios and the os.  Your motherboard seems old -- can you live with just turning it off?  Most of us would recommend an upgrade to a new one!!

the BH6 is an excellent motherboard and I would definately, not yet, deem it faulty.

Got to move on.  After 10 or more times turning it off with no problems on restart, she decided against spending any more money on it and would "live with it".  Several days have passed and no complaints and a new computer next year is the ultimate answer.  Wish we could have solved it, and I appreciate the aumha.org website.

Thanks again.
