Instead of trying to delete it, turn it off permanently. Got to CONTROL PANEL > FAST FIND and then click on INDEX and then CLOSE AND STOP.

It would start up randomly and access itself for 5 minutes or more. This morning I went to Google and typed in "overactive hard drive" and the first legitimate hit was from EE with alot of responces. I tried StoneG's recommendation and my hard drive is getting some much needed rest. Thanks EE and Thanks StoneG. You deserve an A+ not a C.
One question: The only way I could get Fast Find to stop was to remove it with my Office 97 CD. However it still shows up and can be accessed in the Control Panel. Is there a way to remove it completely. I was never able to find it in the Start Menu.

FastFind
Microsoft Windows has, in an attempt to decrease I/O, created a utility called Fastfind. Fastfind works fine with some applications, but oddly enough, is terrible with many Microsoft applications such as Outlook and Word. Fastfind also has the undesirable effect of causing the occasional crash and/or major slowdown.
If you have Fastfind installed and want to remove it, go to Explorer by right-clicking on the Start button, then go to the Programs menu by left-clicking the Start Menu, and choose Startup. Within Startup, find Findfast and delete it or move it. After you finish, you'll want to reboot your system.
