Browse All Topicstrying to defrag my hard drive i get a message saying the contents of the drive have changed and defrag restarts! this cycles over and over and never gets beyond 10% completed! i looked into control/Alt/delete and stopped all the programs i could but this did not help. i am using windows 98 with norton virus protection and black ice firewall.
how about some suggestions on what to do now.

Boot into Safe mode (hold ctrl key down while starting the PC)
from safe mode right click desktop , left click properties and go to screensavers. Set it to "none"
now run your defrag there from safe mode and it will complete
