Hi!
As i Suppose u have installed any network servises or protocol and cancelled that or haven't completed that properly. What u have to do is that edit the system registry by exececuting the command from start run REGEDIT
find for those files ie.netsup.vxd ,vredir,Dfs.vxd,Vserver
nad delete that from the windows registry and save the registry. The problem of those files when u log on to windows can be solved by editing the file system.ini with almost same process. feel free to ask in case of trouble.

seeing as your not really an expert by the sounds of it, how about something simple like, run the sfc from the start buton run> type in sfc, this will cheak your pc for corrupted files and will ask you to restore them. when done and fixed anything that needed that, cheak your system devices are there any yellow question marks? if so update any drivers as required. Or simply put your windows 98 cd in the rom and run setup from there, it won't effect your current programs only windows 98 will restore and hopefully fix all those missing dills. Keep your windows 98 cd in the rom when doing the sfc, also any cd's that may have drivers for your graphics card or network etc.
Another thought> type in misconfig from your start run button,go to startup> untick what you know windows doesnt need at the startup.reboot Try simple things first. Reagrds Merete

yah i think sfc will probably work.. as merete has talked about
but also reinstalling your networking components will probably fix this..
i suspect you chose skip file while installing networking components..

or if you want you may just extract each of those files individually
http://vil.nai.com/vil/systemhelpdocs/SFC.htm
gives information on using sfc to extract single files..
replace wsock32.dll with the system file you want to restore..
namely vredir.vxd or dfs.vxd or vserver.vxd or msnp.dll

Hi again Seeyee,
have you resolved it yet, as an add on, after you have correctly assessed that windows is working correctly, I would suggest you remove all your internet connection sharing settings, and start from the beginning for your internet connection sharing. Here is a link that shows a step by step guide on how to setup internet connection sharing for windows 98 2nd edition and any questions you have.

I've got that error after an imcomplete network adapter or protocol (I forget which) installation...  Try deleting whatever network adapter or protocol failed to install and reinstalling it.  Hope this helps.

I had just the same problemappear afterI installed windows on a newly formatted HD.

Another way to obtain these drivers is first make a temp file under C:

Put your cd rom in
go to the dos mode through windows.
go to f:\win98 for example
type
extract.exe /a /L c:temp base4.cab dfs.vdx

The command will start at the first cab file and look through all the cabs to find dfs.vdx and then store it in Temp.

My solution is quicker: just uninstall and install again  "Dialup adapter".

I apologize if I misinterpreted the rules of this board, but if further comments, after the question has been finalised are not appreciated, why do we have the "Post a comment" box still available?
Your solution "remove and reinstall all your internet connection sharing settings" does work. The point is that only a small percentage of users have ICS installed to begin with. Compare it with "dial up adapter" and you'll see that the proposed procedure to correct the problem does make sense.

hi

if the problem with the vxd files happend to you after  installing DirectX.

than you need to delete these files from the registry.

in the command line type "regedit" and search for the files name, and every time he finds one delete it.

by: imnajamPosted on 2004-06-22 at 11:09:45ID: 11372113

Hello Seeyee,

I looked at the above mentioned files and found that all are related to network, I guess that you have an ethernet card installed or related networking file missing.

Here is a list of the standard vxd files used by Win98.
Dfs.vxd used by Microsoft Networking
Javasup.vxd used by Microsoft Java
Msmouse.vxd used by Microsoft Mouse
Ndis.vxd used by Microsoft Networking
Ndis2sup.vxd used by Microsoft Networking
Ndiswan.vxd used by Microsoft Networking
Vnetsup.vxd used by Microsoft Networking
Vfixd.vxd used by Video Phone helper
Vnetbios.vxd used by Microsoft Networking
Vredir.vxd used by Microsoft Networking
Vserver.vxd used by Microsoft Networking

reference site URL:http://www.911networks.com/win9x_networking.htm

as to solve that problem in a easy way I would like to delete each and everything by right clicking network neighbourhood and choosing properties.....delete tcp/ip, netbeui, your ethernet card driver and everything.........after that you will be asked to restart your pc
restart than it will ask you to install or locate the driver for your ethernet card follow the steps and install the necessary protocols file and print sharing and TCP/IP, net beui and other as per your own requirement.

you might want to remove all networking component by going to Add/Remove programs than windows setup and untick the networking component or something relevent to networking and after restart install them again...

hopefully it will help you to solve the problem.....

if you face any problem or want any more clarification you are almost welcome :)

Greetings:)

peace to the computer family I have seen the solution for the problem I have.cannot find  a device file that maybe needed to run windows or windows applications.
the windows registry or system INI file refers to this device file. but the device file is no longer exists if you deleted this file on purpose try uninstalling the associated application usiing its unistall or setup program.

if you still want to use the application associated with this device file try reinstalling that application or replace the missing file. c:\progra~1\sysmantec\sysmevnet.386. now i did everything the solution said and i even reinstalled windows 98 in hopes that the file would be reinstalled back on the  machine but it didn't work. is there anything else to do about this. need help with problem

                       thanks very much michael

by: gonzal13Posted on 2004-09-18 at 18:29:32ID: 12093865

Well I have Norton Aintivirus and Norton Firewall. I went to the Windows Explorer and here is what I have:
s32evnt1.dll
symevent.cat
syevent.inf
symevent.sys
SYMEVNT.386

Looks similar to what you seem to have generated by a norton program

I searched the registry and found it:

c:\program files\symantec

Thus If you look for it in the registry you should find your version also. Look to see if you have a Symantec folder with the sysmevnet.386.

If not, then remove it from the registry if you are not going to reinstall a norton product.

Slightly confused. Which norton products do you intend to reinstal or have you reinstall them?

It is under my impression since you awarded the points and your last statmnt asked another question, that it should be in the form of a new question.

One way to avoid retyping text is to Highlight th body of the complete text and comments hit ctrl c and then open up a new question. In the body click ctrl v. Ten highlight and deleate extraneous items. Just a suggestion, take not I did not read the compete text only your last comment.

ps If you are using Norton 4oo4, it is not compatable with win98.

This might be old hats, apologies if it is.
You just need to add the File and print server to your networking.
I had the same problem setting up my Optusnet ADSL, the bugger at the time couldn't tell e what it was.
I've nutted it out now.

Ka.

Boy it is hard reading capitalized text!

Did you install windows on top of itself? In other words did you open up windows, inserted the cd rom, opened windows explorer, went to the cd rom. then to win98 folder and clicked on setup? This does not change any of the settings nor is data lost but does fix a multitude of ills that look as wierd problems.

I am working on a computer that has the same problem message that starts this chain.  Can not find device file.... vnetsup.vxd with  multiple iterations.  After this we get a .dll file missing and the system shuts down.

What can I do to get the system to run without having to format the hard drive?

by: MeretePosted on 2005-06-22 at 19:10:48ID: 14281005

your missing your modem drivers>>http://www.modem-drivers.com/drivers/78/78126.htm
I'd suggest go to safemode remove all devices ontowards modem, network card,  remove the network card  physically from the machine until you get the modem working ok.
Then reboot and download that driver for your modem, go to add new hardware and choose modem.
Do you have the mainboard manual for that machine? And the cd?
check your multi media audio drivers are all installed ok.
Download the file: Vnetsup.vxd
http://www.dynamiclink.nl/htmfiles/rframes/info_vxd/info_v/66.htm

how to run scan for corrupted files in windows 98 just scroll down to the pictures and heading for 98..
