How to Monitor Users and Ports with Microsoft RAS Server Monitor Tool
by Lee Kimber, Microsoft Program Manager, and the Coho Internet team
Monitoring the success or failure of users' dial-up connections has always been a challenge because of the intermittent nature of dial-up connections. The Microsoft® Windows® 2000 Resource Kit contains the RAS Server Monitor tool, RasSrvMon.exe, which not only simplifies RAS troubleshooting, but which also enables ISPs to gather useful information about RAS server usage per port or per user. That's the kind of information you need to predict future hardware needs.
Overview
RAS Server Monitor offers four views of user dial-in activities:
Port Status
Users - Active
Users - History Summary
Users - History Details
A fifth tab in the tool allows you to configure it to fire scripts if certain thresholds are reached.
Within each view is a wealth of detail that will help you plan future hardware requirements, spot modem trouble early, and shorten downtimes. This document runs through these and then moves on to installing and using RAS Server Monitor.
