Question

problem with c-media sound card and audio program

Asked by: el_jaguar

When using W98SE, windows update offered an actualization for my c-media soundcard that I never could install. Anyway, the failed installation was enough for the sound to stop working. I downloaded the appropiate drivers from c-media and everything seemed to work fine. Then I discovered that the windows mixer had been replaced by a C-media mixer and that my audio player -Quinntessential Player- had lost the ability to control volume. I got rid of the C-Media Mixer by removing the registry entry, and recovered the standard windows mixer, but still the QCD has no control over volume. I haven´t try with other audio software yet, but I would like to set things right once again. Any ideas?

el_jaguar,
Uninstall Quinntessential Player, reboot, and reinstall the Player.

If no joy, Boot to Safe Mode. Go to Control Panel > System > Device Manager.  Delete all the sound divers, including the mixer.  Reboot and let Windows reinstall them.  Have your sound card drivers if Windows ask for them.

Best wishes, war1

Thanks for your answer, war1.
I've already uninstall program and drivers, and everything remains the same. Problem is I don't have any drivers disks for the soundcard. Windows CD doesn't include any driver that it recognizes as valid, so I guess I am tied to the new ones :( .  What really troubles me is the chance that other sound related programs could also lose volume control; I can live with QCD (in that computer, at least...)

It should have said: without QCD...

el_jaguar,
I wish I could help you more with QCD, but I don't know too much about it.  You can download the proper sound card drivers by doing the following. Take an inventory of your computer with Belarc Advisor

http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html

Once you know the sound card model number, go to the manufacturer's website or www.drivers.com to download the dirvers for your operating system.

Well, I didn´t use the belarc program, but I rechecked the drivers and it seems the one I downloaded fron C-media was an upgrade (it doesn´t say that anywhere-I´m just deducing it).
I downloaded a full version of the driver, a little older, and everything worked fine. Then I installed the one from C-media. So your answer was right in the end, only that I had the wrong material to work with. Thanks!

el_jaguar, glad the problem is solved.  Why the C?  See guidelines for grading

How Do I Know What Grade to Give?
Although we use an A-C scale here at Experts Exchange, it works differently than, say, school grades. If one or more Experts' proposals are accepted as answers, they should usually be given an A or B grade, since they have taken the time to provide you with a working solution. If a possible solution is incomplete - ask for clarification or details before accepting the answer and grading it. People should not be given lower grades because of incorrect grammar or because you just accepted their answer or comment to close the question. Keep in mind, your question and any follow-up comments should be focused so that there can be a specific answer. The following is a good guideline to follow when grading:

A: The Expert(s) either provided you with a thorough answer or they provided you with a link to information that thoroughly answered your question. An "A" can also be given to any answer that you found informative or enlightening beyond the direct question that you asked.

B: The Expert(s) provided an acceptable solution, or a link to an acceptable solution, that you were able to use, although you may have needed a bit more information to complete the task.

C: Because Experts' reliability are often judged by their grading records, many Experts would like the opportunity to clarify if you have questions about their solutions. If you have given the Expert(s) ample time to respond to your clarification posts and you have responded to each of their posts providing requested information; or if the answers, after clarification, lack finality or do not completely address the issue presented, then a "C" grade is an option. You also have the option here of just asking Community Support to delete the question.

Remember, the Expert helping you today is probably going to be helping you next time you post a question. Give them a fair chance to earn an 'Excellent!' grade and they'll provide you with some amazing support.
